The US Air Force has announced that it has leased land to a solar power company so that it can build the largest solar photovoltaic development in North America. The USAF has agreed to lease a 3,288-acre parcel of land at Edwards Air Force Base in California to Fotowatio Renewable Ventures: a company that builds, owns and operates solar plants around the world. The South Carolina Department of Commerce, the Central SC Alliance and Richland County joined Pure Power Technologies, a Navistar company, in celebrating the inauguration of the company’s research and development operation in the Columbia Technical Center. Company representatives and state and local leaders were on hand for the event. In October, Navistar Inc. announced the finalization of an agreement to
acquire certain assets and the membership interests of Continental Diesel
Systems U.S. LLC, to manufacture key fuel injection components for its MaxxForceÂ® diesel engines.
25 Jan 10. Northrop Grumman Corporation’s Defense Systems division has received the Software Engineering Institute’s (SEI) Capability Maturity Model Integration for Development (CMMI-DEV(R)) Level 5, the highest rating possible. The CMMI for Development model is used to appraise and recognize best practices in software engineering and systems engineering. Within the last three years, Northrop Grumman has achieved 10 CMMI Level 5 appraisals, more than any other any U.S. defense or commercial company, and more than one-fifth of the 48 CMMI Level 5 appraisals reported by all North American companies. Northrop Grumman is also the only company, worldwide, with appraisals in the three CMMI models — development, acquisition and service.
27 Jan 10. Vinnell, Brown & Root, LLC (VBR), a 50/50 joint venture between KBR and Northrop Grumman, has been awarded a contract by the United States Air Force in Europe to provide base operations support services for locations in Turkey and Spain. The Turkey-Spain Base Operations Contract is a Fixed Price Incentive (FPI) firm target with performance incentive contract with a potential value of $335m (award is Euro 225.8m) over four and a half years. VBR will provide program management, civil engineering, base services, logistics support, air terminal and ground handling, postal services and communications, occupational health/industrial hygiene, and ambulance services.
26 Jan 10. Expert consultants from WYG have given the go ahead for the MoD to occupy its new Joint Headquarters building on Northwood Headquarters site in Middlesex. WYG Management Services is working for Eastbury Park Ltd (PFI) as ‘Independent Certifier’ of the buildings which means the consultants need to impartially assess them for handover and occupation. The circa £160m PFI project will provide new assets and infrastructure including office and operational buildings, community facilities and living accommodation, and substantial refurbishment to some existing buildings. Clive Anderson, Managing Director, WYG Management Services, said: “We have a track record of providing creative solutions to some of the world’s most challenging projects. We are delighted to be involved in such a prestigious project that continues our strategic relationship with the MoD. “Our team assesses the construction stages at given milestones of the project with the prime objective of certifying completion on behalf of our client, Eastbury Park Ltd, so that the MoD is able to take beneficial occupation. We have added significant value to the end quality by developing robust procedures” he added. The consultant is working alongside the client reporting formally to them on areas including, architecture, construction, building services, ICT infrastructure and health and safety. The build phase of the project is expected to be completed in August 2011.
