EUROPE APPOINTMENTS
30 Jul 09. Chief of the General Staff (CGS): Last Public Speech. CGS addressed the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) on The Challenge for Defence in the Next Decade (30 Jul 09).
Comment: General Sir Richard Dannatt is to become the next Constable of the Tower of London, as well as Chairman of the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), upon retirement as CGS. 03 Aug 09. Major General A Salmon OBE to be Deputy Chief of Staff Force Readiness at SHAPE with effect from March 2010. This is a newly created job. His successor as CAF/CGRM will be announced in the autumn.
31 Jul 09. NATO: Change of Secretary General. Mr Jaap de Hoop Scheffer’s tenure as NATO Secretary General ended on 31 Jul 09. Mr Anders Fogh Rasmussen assumed the appointment of Secretary General on 1 Aug 09.
Comment: Mr Rasmussen is a former Prime Minister of Denmark. The new Secretary General is due to chair his first North Atlantic Council Meeting on 4 Aug 09. (Source: DNA DEFENCE NEWS ANALYSIS, Issue 10/29, 03 Aug 09)
30 Jul 09. The Minister for Science and Innovation, Lord Drayson today announced the appointment of Professor Michael Sterling as the new Chair of the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC). (Source: Technology4Media.com)
05 Jun 09. Ministerial Appointments: Change of Defence Secretary. The Right Honourable J M P Hutton MP resigned as Secretary of State for Defence on 5 Jun 09 and was replaced by The Right Honourable R W Ainsworth MP. In his resignation statement, Mr Hutton also said that he would be standing down as a Member of Parliament at the next General Election.
Comment: Mr Ainsworth’s promotion was from Minister of State in the MoD (or Ministerial Number Two to the Secretary of State) where he had been since June 2007. A replacement for the Minister of State and any other Ministerial changes are expected to be announced on 8 Jun 07. A revised list of the Defence Council will be published when the dust has settled. 03 Jun 09. Piracy: OP ATALANTA. Rear Admiral P D Hudson CBE took over (3 Jun 09) from Rear Admiral P A Jones as the Commander of
OP EU NAVFOR – ATALANTA. The Operation is commanded from the Headquarters at Northwood, as directed by the EU authorities. The Force Headquarters is on board a Spanish frigate, SPS NUMANCIA.
Comment: OP ATALANTA started on 8 Dec 08 in support of UN Security Council Resolutions and is the first Naval Operation launched by the EU. The main aim of the Operation is the protection of vessels delivering food aid to displaced people in Somalia. As well as the Operational Commander and Headquarters (shown above), the UK provided HMS NORTHUMBERLAND until 28 Feb 09. RFA Wave Knight has also been of assistance. 13 ships and two maritime patrol aircraft are currently engaged in OP ATALANTA.
09 Jun 09. Defence job for science minister. Lord Drayson will oversee UK military research spending in addition to his civil responsibilities. The peer was handed a Ministry of Defence brief in Gordon Brown’s government reshuffle. The changes also merged science and business in the new Department for Business Innovation and Skills.
