06 Apr 09. T.B. Penick & Sons, Inc., San Diego, Calif., is being awarded $9,123,862 for firm fixed price task order #0005 under a previously awarded multiple award construction contract (N62473-08-D-8612) for design and construction of a new combat training tank complex at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar. The work to be performed provides for construction of a new outdoor combat training tank complex, which includes a swimming pool with a dive tower, lighted concrete pool deck, and a single-story masonry and steel pool building with an attached mechanical equipment building. The site infrastructure improvements include perimeter walls and gates, utilities, parking, and roadwork. The contractor shall provide all labor, supervision, materials, and equipment necessary to complete the work as described in the request for proposal. The task order also contains one unexercised option, which if exercised would increase the cumulative task order value to $10,323,862. Work will be performed in San Diego, Calif., and is expected to be completed by Oct. 2010. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year. Five proposals were received for this task order. The Naval Facilities Engineering Command, Southwest, San Diego, Calif., is the contracting activity.

02 Apr 09. Malaysian prime minister resigns. Malaysia’s king has accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi, paving the way for his deputy Najib Razak to take over. Mr Abdullah had been under pressure to resign since his Umno party suffered its worst ever poll results a year ago. The party, in power since independence in 1957, faces internal divisions as well as a strong opposition challenge. Mr Najib has already taken over as Umno leader, and became prime minister last Friday. (Source: BBC)
02 Apr 09. Northern Ireland’s manufacturing industry has lost 2% of its workforce in four days, the employment minister has said. Sir Reg Empey’s comments followed the loss of almost 1,000 jobs in Belfast at aerospace company Bombardier on Thursday. Almost 400 other industrial jobs have been lost in NI this week. “Clearly it is the worst loss of jobs in a week in manufacturing in a long time,” he said. “About 1,400 jobs that we know of are going – it is a huge slice of the manufacturing workforce, about 2%, since Monday. Apr 09. U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates on Monday recommended discontinuing procurement of the C-17 and reducing production of F/A-18s, which could hurt thousands of Boeing Co. employees in St. Louis. About 4,000 local employees work on the final assembly of the F/A-18, and 1,800 area employees work on the C-17, U.S. Sen. Kit Bond, R-Missouri, said during a news conference Monday at Boeing’s Integrated Defense Systems unit. There are also thousands more supplier-related jobs statewide that could be impacted by cutbacks at Chicago-based Boeing (NYSE: BA), he said. (Source: Google)

31 Mar 09. Pay Review: Increases from 1 Apr 09. The Review Body on Senior Salaries and the Armed Forces Pay Review Body published (31 Mar 09) their Reports for 2009. Senior Salaries (i.e. those for two, three and four star Officers) have risen by 2.8% from
1 Apr 09. The basic military salary for Officers below two star rank and for all Other Ranks has also risen by 2.8%, as has specialist pay. The new rates are tabulated at page 3.
