17 Jul 08. The SBAC marked International Youth Day at the Farnborough Air Show by outlining the exciting careers available to young people within the aerospace and defence industry. 650 students aged between the ages of 14 and 20 attended the Air Show from schools and colleges across the country. The aerospace and defence industry is welcoming them to the event to demonstrate how the futures of the industry and the students are intertwined. The industry needs young people with the right blend of skills, imagination and commitment in order for it to survive in the future against fierce international competition. Those young people who enter employment in the sector will then join in projects to safeguard their futures by delivering civil aircraft that produce much lower CO2 emissions and defence equipment to protect the Armed Forces and the nation. The Youth Day will also see a “Ryder Cup of Rocketry” ‘fly-off’ competition between the winners of the respective rocketry challenges in the US and UK. The winning
students are required to design and build a safe and stable model rocket and use it to lift a fragile payload (two raw hen’s eggs) to an altitude of exactly 750 feet for a total flight duration of exactly 45 seconds and then return the payload safely and undamaged. The competition will take place on the morning of Friday 18 July away from the Farnborough Air Show site for safety reasons but the winners will be presented with their prize back on the site. The competition will also be replayed on screens around the Air Show.
