IWA – SNIPERS AND NIGHT HUNTERS PREVAIL
By Julian Nettlefold

14 Mar 10. Once again, following close on the heels of the visit to the Shot Show in Las Vegas, the Editor went over to Nuremburg to the German equivalent, IWA. (See: BATTLESPACE EXHIBITION NEWS Vol.13 ISSUE 01, 21 January 2011, SHOT SHOW OPENS WITH A BANG!) Whilst not the size of the Shot Show, IWA displayed an amazing array of technologies to aid the hunter, policeman and soldier.

IWA & Outdoor Classics has been the world’s leading exhibition for the hunting and sporting guns, outdoor and accessories sector for over 35 years. For the first time more than 1,129 exhibitors with an international share of over 74 % presented in 2009 their products and services to around 32,000 trade visitors from more than 100 nations. The international share of visitors is about 60 % – which makes IWA & Outdoor Classics in the Exhibition Centre Nuremberg a truly multinational occasion for the industry.

Barrett

Barrett, the Company best known for its .50 calibre sniper rifle showed a new range of new calibre weapons and a new ballistic computer.

Model 82A1.

For more than two decades, this short-recoil, semi-automatic series rifle has been carefully honed, studied and then refined again. Unlike other semi-automatic .50 BMG rifles, the Model 82A1 is completely reliable. Its chamber is chrome-plated and dimensioned for both civilian and military ammunition. The extractor and ejector are proven to work under any condition, and close tolerances on every part allow it to function in all environments.

New .416 caliber alternative

Barrett announced the availability of their flagship Model 82A1 semiautomatic rifle chambered for the .416 Barrett cartridge. The highly anticipated Model 82A1 offering in .416 Barrett cartridge system offers premium ballistic performance in an awesome semi-automatic rifle. The Model 82A1 chambered in .416 Barrett is the ultimate long-range performer.

The much-requested addition of the .416 Barrett in the semi-automatic product line provides a long-range alternative to jurisdictions that restrict .50 caliber rifles. Created in 2005, the .416 Barrett cartridge’s remarkable ballistic performance exceeds the .50 BMG. Both rifle and cartridge have been proven to be immensely popular worldwide. With enhanced accuracy and stability, not to mention a significantly higher muzzle velocity, the .416 offers incredible long-range precision.

This newest member of the Model 82A1 family is only discernable from its .50 caliber predecessor by a new muzzle brake design, which has been optimized to tame the unique recoil impulse of the .416 cartridge. The reengineered muzzle brake, dual barrel springs and long mainspring design make the 82A1 comfortable to shoot. Internally, this rifle features a chrome-lined barrel and a 10-round magazine that has been modified to feed the shorter .416 cartridge. The .416 Barrett produces a muzzle velocity of 3200 fps and an effective range in excess of 2000 yards with a 395 grain projectile and 29” barrel.

The new .416 caliber alternative further adds to the allure of the Model 82A1. With enhanced accuracy and stability, not to mention a significantly higher muzzle velocity, the .416 offers incredible long-range precision. Its re-engineered muzzle break, dual barrel springs and long mainspring design make the 82A1 comfortable and — dare we say — exciting to shoot. The Model 82A1 fits into a regular sized carrying case. Although it’s transported as a disassembled upper and lower receiver, it can be ready to fire in under a minute by simply inserting two assembly pins through both receivers. The scope remains mounted on the upper receiver, maintaining scope zero. The rifle’s M1913 optics rail is tapered 27 MOA to take full advantage of the scope’s elevation travel. Features M1913 steel optics rail, 27 MOA elevation 10-round magazine.
