11 Mar 08. India’s homegrown land forces Electronic Warfare system, Samyukta, is complete and will be integrated with the user; the system is for mobile, tactical battlefield use. It will be fully integrated with the Indian Army by the end of this year as the systems are nearing completion. The development of the project was hit during U.S. sanctions after India’s nuclear test in 1998. Samyukta is being jointly developed by the Hyderabad-based Defence Electronics Research Laboratory (DLRL) and the Indian Army. The other organizations involved in the design and development of Samyukta include the state owned Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL), Electronics Corporation of India Ltd (ECIL) and private sector companies Tata Power Corporation and over 40 small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

The system mounted on 145 Tatra vehicles covers High Frequency to Millimetre wave frequencies range. The Coverage of the electronic spectrum of frequencies is done in the communication segment and the non-communication segment which are finally integrated with the master control centre (MCC) through appropriate transmission stations.

The Samyukta system is capable of handling both ground-based and airborne threats and can intercept, detect, search, identify and locate complex communication and radar signals claimed a scientist of DRDL. It monitors and analyses communication and radar activity across Forward Edge of the Battle Area (FEBA) and many other sophisticated features. Once deployed, the system has operational frontal coverage of 150/70km added the scientist.

Samyuktha will provide the army with the ability to detect and jam enemy communications, monitor movements — an ability that only a few select nations possess claimed the Indian Army official.
The U.S. sanctions imposed after India’s nuclear explosion in 1998 affected the development of the Samyyukta system but the subsystems were developed in Indian defence research laboratories.

The phased–array radar of Samyuktha, Rajendra, has been developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation [DRDO] The Rajendra radar is also part of the Akash medium range surface-to-air missile system, which is to be inducted in the Indian Army by 2009.

DRDO has also leveraged the Rajendra project to develop an advanced Weapon-Locating Radar (WLR). The system is a spin-off of the Phased Array Radar technology development for the Rajendra radar. Configured on a wheeled vehicle and designed to operate in a high-density fire environment, the WLR has all weather capability, high mobility and quick reaction time. The DRDO has also developed a 3D Central Acquisition Radar (CAR)which is capable of handling 150 targets in Track-While-Scan (TWS) mode and a detection range of more than 150 km at 7.5 rpm. It is designed to operate in heavy ECM environments and is also part of the futyuristic EW systems of the Indian defence forces.

In the long term plan the EW systems of the Army (Samyukta), Naval EW (Sangraha) and Air Force EW (Tempest) would be synchronized. The Tempest is a jammer system capable of barrage-, continuous-wave, and pulse-repeater jamming said a senior Indian Air Force official.
One of the other portable EW systems developed by India includes the Battle Field Surveillance Radar(Medium Range) Developed by state-owned Bharat Electronics Limtied (BEL) used to detect tanks, soldiers,vehicles and low-flying Helicopters at a range of 40 kilometers.

The Battlefield Surveillance Radar(Short Range) is light weight man portable pulse Doppler RADAR of range 18km for detection of Soldiers,Tanks etc with in-built GPS.It can Track while Scan 50 targets.
