03 Dec 09. Navistar’s Melrose Park engine plant was recently honored with the prestigious Illinois Governor’s Sustainability Award. This is the 14th time Navistar’s Melrose Park engine plant has received the award for its efforts to safeguard the environment and promote sustainability initiatives in Illinois. This year, the award recognizes the plant for its significant efforts at reducing energy and water consumption. Since 2007, the plant has reduced the amount of energy it consumes during production and non-production hours by 14 million kilowatt hours (kWh). In addition, this year the plant reduced its water consumption by 20 million gallons or more than 37 percent, which not only saved millions of gallons of water but also prevented unnecessary water usage and disposal. Since 1990, Navistar’s Melrose Park engine plant has exceeded environmental compliance and implemented pollution prevention projects that have long-lasting impacts on the environment. As part of its commitment to continuous improvement and being a leader in global citizenship, Navistar has chosen to follow the stringent requirements of International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 14001 certification and has set measurable goals to track progress on its environmental priorities. These priorities include increasing environmental awareness; reducing energy, water, and natural gas usage; and maintaining strong partnerships with governmental and locally-based environmental agencies.

07 Dec 09. General Dynamics C4 Systems has received a second certification under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design – Existing Building (LEED-EB), this time under the new Operations Maintenance designation or LEED-EB/OM. The award was received
November 30, 2009, for its 850,000 square-foot office building in
Scottsdale. It is the first industrial site of its size in the United States to receive the LEED-EB/OM designation by the U.S. Green Building Council. In 2005, General Dynamics received its first certification for the 700,000 square-foot Roosevelt building, which is part of the Scottsdale campus. LEED is the nation’s preeminent program for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings.

02 Dec 09. Lockheed Martin and MIT today announced a major research partnership to transform how the world combats climate change and produces and consumes energy. The centerpiece of the collaboration will focus on global climate initiatives, such as carbon modeling and verification and utility-scale energy storage. With an investment of $5m over five years, Lockheed Martin has become a Sustaining Member of the MIT Energy Initiative (MITEI), supporting a portfolio of diverse, high-impact energy research projects and education at the Institute. Lockheed Martin will direct a majority of its annual contribution to targeted research projects in the areas of climate change, alternative energies, as well as energy storage and management. In addition to the focused, collaborative research, Lockheed Martin will also support MITEI’s Energy Research Seed Fund program to support innovative early-stage research projects addressing energy and related environmental issues. In addition, the Corporation will support two Energy Fellows at the Institute for each year of its five-year commitment.
