08 Feb 09. ‘Toxic’ ship arrives in Teesside. A former French aircraft carrier – rejected by India and Egypt as being too toxic to be broken up – has arrived at its final resting place in Teesside. The Clemenceau is to be dismantled and recycled at Graythorp, Hartlepool. Campaigners say asbestos on board will damage the environment and the health of workers, but the Environment Agency says it has rigorous controls in place. Last year, a local firm won a long legal battle to scrap four former US naval vessels, dubbed “ghost ships”. Able UK says the project to dismantle the 32,700-tonne Clemenceau is one of the largest of its kind in Europe. Work on the Clemenceau will take place alongside existing contracts to scrap the four US vessels which arrived on Teesside in 2004. Able overcame environmental concerns over its recycling plans last year and claims operating in a dry dock is the easiest and most environmentally sound way of carrying out the work. (Source: BBC)

03 Feb 09. Axis Technologies Group, Inc., a green technology designer, manufacturer and marketer of a proprietary line of energy-saving and daylight harvesting electronic dimming ballasts for the commercial lighting industry, announced today that the company is assembling an Advisory Panel which will consist of from 8 to 20 experienced and well-connected experts from a variety of fields. The Advisory Panel will greatly assist Axis in bringing their ballasts before the decision makers at all government levels, and to the building management sectors. The Obama administration has already announced their intention to address energy efficiency in federal buildings.

11 Feb 09. CILAS has recently supplied an Armed Force with 28 DHY 307 laser designation systems via the NATO Maintenance and Supply Agency (NAMSA). These systems will be used to provide targeting for laser-guided precision weapons such as smart bombs, semi-active shells and missiles. The DHY 307 laser designator makes it possible to guide both NATO and Russian or Chinese standard ammunitions, giving it maximum interoperability.

11 Feb 09. Cummins has recently been awarded a contract from Mowag to supply 198 ISBe 5.9 litre engines rated at 250hp (186 kW) to power Eagle IV patrol vehicles for the German army. This is a follow on order from Mowag for 90 ISBe 5.9 engines for the Danish army.

06 Feb 09. The Federal Office for Information Management and Information Technology of the German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) has commissioned Rohde & Schwarz to develop a software defined radio (SDR) for the Bundeswehr’s joint radio systems (SVFuA). These systems are the basis for the Bundeswehr’s future generations of software defined radios. The aim of the project is not only to develop the base unit, but also to demonstrate that it can be series-produced. The SVFuA will provide the key technology for future command and control of modern armed forces. This system will contribute decisively to the Bundeswehr’s participation in an interoperable information and communications network of joint and combined armed forces. The SVFuA project involves the development of next-generation mobile radios, which are deployed as network nodes and also as terminals with loadable, adaptive, narrowband and wideband waveforms. In the future, these radio systems will be the backbone of the mobile communications system of the Bundeswehr for all military services during missions.
