GREEN ISSUES
May 08. A new type of engine fuel is undergoing testing at Arnold Engineering Development Center, Tennessee, ahead of its implementation in aircraft used by the US Air Force. The Pratt and Whitney F100 engine is being tested in a J-1 simulated altitude jet engine test cell and uses a mixture of alternative synthetic fuel. If successfully trialled it will be used in the F-15 Eagle and F-16 Fighting Falcon which will become the first fighter jet engines to use the technology. The new engine is part of the US Air Force’s drive to invest further in more environmentally friendly and sustainable fuel sources. The project has already evaluated and certified the use of synthetic paraffinic kerosene alternative fuel which is extracted from natural gas or coal and used in all Air Force aircraft.
