FLOOD DAMAGE CAUSES CZECH CONTRACT CANCELLATION

20 Aug 02. The Czech Republic Cabinet has cancelled, pro-tem, an order for 24 Gripen fighters to pay for the flood damage. There is an urgent need to replace these fighters by 20004 and the possibility of upgrades to the existing fleet of Russian planes may resurrect.

The flood damage has been so intense in Central Europe that Germany has shelved proposed tax cuts to pay for the damage. Unconfirmed reports from Germany suggest that prior to the floods, the Defence Budget in Germany was strained to breaking point. Could the Germans follow the Czechs and make budget cuts in the form of cancellation of A400M or Meteor?
