22 April 2008. With Britain’s armed forces adopting powerful new technologies in the drive to improve command and fight more effectively, senior UK military commanders and experts will debate the future of Land Digitization at a prestigious conference in London on 08 May 2008. The latest event in the Whither Warfare series, organised by the General Dynamics UK Research Foundation in partnership with the Ministry of Defence, will examine progress in the delivery of Network Enabled Capability and the introduction of modern information systems to support command and battlespace management.
With a key-note address by General Sir David Richards, Commander in Chief Land Forces, guest speakers will include key decision-makers in the UK’s armed forces and defence industry, including:
* Lt. Gen. Andrew Figgures, Deputy Chief of Defence Staff (Equipment Capability)
* Lt. Gen. Graeme Lamb, Commander Field Army
* Dr Sandy Wilson, President and Managing Director, General Dynamics UK
* Air Marshal Sir Barry Thornton, Chief of Materiel (Air)
* Brig. James Bashall, Commander 1 Mechanized Brigade
* Brig. David Meyer, Director, Command Battlespace Management
The day’s discussions will be mentored by Gen. Sir Rupert Smith and Lt. Gen. Sir Rob Fry, with sessions chaired by Professor Christopher Elliot, Maj. Gen. Bill Robins, and Maj. Gen. Bill Moore, Director General Logistics, Support & Equipment, HQ LAND.
Professor Christopher Elliott, Director of the Whither Warfare series, said: “UK Land Forces have completed the first stage of the introduction of modern information systems to support command and battlespace management. These powerful new technologies affect not only the means but also the way of command, so a continuing debate about the shape and form they should take is vital.”
22 Apr 08. Airbus is among the companies attending the event in Cardiff. Buyers from international aerospace companies are taking part in an event which could see them spend millions of pounds with Welsh suppliers. Aerolink Wales 2008 in Cardiff will link Welsh firms and other suppliers from across the UK with companies that have an estimated £100m to spend.
“In terms of this sort of manufacturing it is boom time in Wales,” said the Aerospace Wales Forum (AWF). Economy Minister Ieuan Wyn Jones said it was a showcase for Welsh expertise. The event is also seen as an opportunity for delegates to establish deals with universities to work on research projects and product development. Paul Lindsay of organisers, the AWF, said the aerospace industry in Wales had an annual turnover of £3bn and employed around 25,000 people directly in 180 companies.
