Clarion Defence Redefines Defence Exhibitions with Launch of “Apex.” Clarion Defence, a Blackstone owned British company known for hosting renowned international military and industry events such as DSEI today announced a new US focused engagement offering, Apex – designed to facilitate improved interaction among operators, policymakers, and technologists to develop solutions to the Department of Defense’s most pressing problems.

Departing from the conventional focus of promoting products and services as part of traditional longer-term procurement cycles, Apex will be a collaborative gathering focused on addressing imminent challenges and opportunities confronting US and allied militaries and defence industry partners.

Wars in Ukraine and the Middle East serve as stark reminders of how adversaries leverage commercially derived drones, electromagnetic warfare systems, sensors, and satellite communications to gain a battlefield advantage against even first-rate militaries. The United States, its allies and partners are currently using legacy technology, platforms, and weapons to deter and combat belligerence while aggressively trying to field constantly evolving dual-use technology, all through an acquisition system that is not sufficiently nimble or responsive to today’s security environment.

“Challenges posed by the likes of China, Russia, and Iran are too immediate to rely solely on long-term solutions. Today’s available military and commercial technologies are more than sufficient to counter threats and exploit asymmetric opportunities – the way defence stakeholders publicly collaborate and share information must be more temporally focused”, said Bryan Clark, Senior Fellow and Director, Center for Defense Concepts and Technology, Hudson Institute. “Time must be seen as an equal commodity when compared with factors such as cost, lethality, and scale. Engagements like Apex will help speed-up the process in a way that’s long overdue.

Building up to Apex in Washington from January 28 – 29 2025 will be a series of briefings and events to raise awareness and bring partners into this effort. The inaugural awareness event was held at the Hudson Institute in January where like-minded representatives from DoD, industry and media gathered to discuss the latest efforts to solve operational problems with today’s dual-use technology.

Under the esteemed patronage of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the World Defense Show 2024confirms a growing list of air and land assets arriving for the event in February. The air assets include established mission aircraft, fighter jets, helicopters, UAVs and the latest electric aircraft, while armoured vehicles and tanks, will be shown on the land side. This unique collection of manned and unmanned technology will form an effective showcase of the capabilities of future multi-domain operations.

The dynamic daily air display is led by the Saudi Hawks, the Royal Saudi Air Force aerobatic team, demonstrating their skills and capabilities in the distinctive green and white liveried two-seater trainers. In addition, the Chinese national aerobatic team, Ba Yi, will showcase their piloting expertise.

Other combat aircraft taking to the skies daily include the carbon fibre turboprop Calidus B250 light attack aircraft, the distinctive delta-winged Eurofighter Typhoon, the French Dassault Rafale C, and two roaring F-15s, while the Pakistan Air Force brings the thunder in the form of three JF-17 Thunder multirole combat aircraft. There will be daily displays of UAV capabilities, with the Red Cat Teal2, Firejet M180 and Skydio X10D all demonstrating their unique proficiencies.

Out on the apron, WDS 2024 features an incredible static display of more than 50 fixed wing and rotary aircraft, ranging from a Cessna Caravan to a Boeing Chinook. Other assets include the Airbus A320, A321, and Cougar helicopter, Sikorsky Seahawk and Blackhawk, Bombardier Global 6500, Embraer KC390 and the classic LM C130. Cutting edge electric aircraft are also on display including the Volocopter eVTOL air taxi.

Calidus also appears in the daily land demonstrations with the 8 x 8 Wahash multi-role armoured vehicle, alongside the Humvee Saber Light Tactical Vehicle, SAMI’s Obaya and Storm II vehicles and the all-wheel drive off-road Tatra Tactic truck. Among the 70 land assets on display in the show’s expansive courtyard area are a range of vehicles from Otokar, Terradyne, Chrystler, Oshkosh, Saab, GM and Nexter.

ARMA 8×8 WHEELED ARMORED VEHICLE:

At WDS, Otokar exhibits two different variants of ARMA 8×8, one equipped with its 30 mm MIZRAK Turret and other with John Cockerill 105 mm turret.

ARMA 8×8 is a combat-proven modular platform with amphibious capabilities for various missions. ARMA meets survivability, protection level, and mobility requirements of modern armies. In addition to its high combat weight and spacious interiors, ARMA 8×8 also draws attention with its low silhouette.

The armored monocoque body with high ballistic and mine protection allows the integration of variety of mission equipment and weapon systems in different specifications up to 120 mm. ARMA is a platform suitable for Command and Control, Engineering, Ambulance, Recovery, Support, and similar missions.

COBRA II MRAP:

The COBRA II Mine-resistant Ambush Protected Vehicle (COBRA II MRAP) is displayed with 25 mm RCWS at WDS. Cobra II MRAP is developed to ensure high survivability in risky areas. The vehicle provides superior protection for the crew against kinetic energy, mine and IED threats while maintaining high cross-country mobility in battlefield conditions with its independent suspension system. High reliability, ease of maintenance are the other two important design criteria.

With its modular design, COBRA II MRAP provides high payload and spacious internal space for integration of weapon systems and mission equipment. The vehicle can be configured with alternative seating layouts for up to 11 personnel with 3 or 5 door configurations as per specific user requirements.

COBRA II TACTICAL WHEELED ARMORED VEHICLE:

At WDS, Otokar showcases COBRA II with two different turrets, one 12.7 mm RCWS and the other 12.7 mm MIZRAK Closed Turret.

Globally known COBRA II offers high level of protection, payload capacity, and large internal volume. In addition to its superior mobility, COBRA II offers high protection against ballistic, mine, and IED threats. With high power to weight ratio COBRA II delivering high performance. The vehicle is operated by many armies in different parts of the world, on toughest terrain and climate conditions. NEXT-GENERATION MODULAR ARMORED VEHICLE: AKREP II

Otokar is exhibiting AKREP II with a John Cockerill 90 mm turret at WDS.

AKREP II, built on Otokar’s initial AKREP developed in 1990s, is designed as an armored reconnaissance and surveillance vehicle and a large caliber weapon platform. Combining high firepower and survivability in a low silhouette, the AKREP II meets the current and future needs of modern armies by accommodating turrets up to 90mm cannon.

The four-wheel drive system and steerable rear axle of AKREP II greatly enhances the maneuverability capability of the vehicle. The vehicle has a superior mobility and handling capabilities in all terrain conditions no matter mud, snow or puddles. Its compact design, high level of both kinetic and mine protection, and the U-type power package placed at the rear of the vehicle make AKREP II a very special and competitive platform especially where the maneuverability is crowned with crab steering.

As a multi-role vehicle suitable for different types of missions, AKREP II provides effective firepower without compromising survivability as it can accommodate up to 90 mm caliber turrets. Italy’s Leonardo LDOF.MI on Monday signed a memorandum of understanding MoU with Saudi Arabia to explore and develop potential investment and collaboration opportunities in the defence and aerospace sector. The MoU covers a wide range of sectors, including space, rotorcraft, electronics and sensors, the defence group said in a statement. Collaboration could also be extended to the Combat Air and Cross-Domain Integration fields, where the Italian state-controlled defence and aerospace group is active in next-generation technology initiatives and enabling demonstration projects, it added. The MoU strengthens Leonardo’s existing activities in the lucrative Saudi Arabian market, where it has been supplying platforms, systems, technologies and services for decades. The Defence Park on the outdoor display area and in Hall 3 is a new addition to this year’s show. This is where exhibitors are presenting their innovations, including military aircraft, precision-guided munitions, reconnaissance systems, as well as disaster control solutions and policing measures. Hall 3 is also where the Military Support Center MSC can be found, and where the German Luftwaffe and industry are showing how they work to maintain the operational capability of aircraft and equipment.

The Defence Park is an extension of the Static Display. Exhibits here include numerous aircraft and large items of military equipment, such as a Eurofighter and Tornado, a fifth-generation F-35 multirole combat aircraft, an A400M transport aircraft, IRIS-T, PATRIOT and ARROW3 air defence systems, as well as unmanned aerial vehicles. Visitors can inspect the Eurofighter and NH90 helicopter displayed in all their technical detail. What are these aircraft made of and how are they maintained? Both trade visitors and the general public can discover interesting information on military aviation equipment. In addition to the exhibits on the Static Display there will be air displays too.

Sustainability in aerospace

On the civil aviation displays the focus is mainly on new technologies and sustainability. The Aviation segment deals with all aspects of carbon-neutral flight, ranging from electric propulsion systems and sustainable aviation fuels to additive manufacturing and noise reduction technologies. The ILA Future Lab of the German Aerospace Industries Association (BDLI) and the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action will cast their eye into the future. State-funded research and technology projects are being presented, showing how the aerospace industry can contribute to meeting climate targets. There is also a special focus on sustainable aviation fuels (SAF).

In the Advanced Air Mobility segment the spotlight is entirely on transport in the third dimension – ranging from unmanned aerial vehicles to vertical take-off and landing aircraft (eVTOLs).

At ILA, Europe’s largest aerospace show, there is a special emphasis on the Space segment. The Space Pavilion is where the global space flight community comes together. Ministries, agencies, representatives of science and space agencies are presenting their innovations, showing how space flight can improve life on Earth. Exhibits include the climate observation satellites EarthCare and Sentinel-2C as well as the new Ariane 6 rocket booster, all of which are scheduled for launch this year.

The International Supplier Center ISC is the platform for the supply chain, which is the backbone of the industry. This is where OEM buyers and tier-1 vendors can hold meetings and build leads.

A total of four STAGES are hosting a comprehensive programme featuring fascinating information on key ILA topics. In addition to discussions with experts from industry, science, the armed forces and policymakers, various formats dwell on the latest aerospace topics.

ILA Talent Hub brings companies and skills together

The Talent Hub is a new feature of this year’s show. Whether for students, career starters or experienced skilled workers in search of jobs – the Talent Hub brings companies and prospective employees together. On 7 June, ILA Talent Day, the programme features keynote speeches on the latest industry topics, company slams and talent tours. On the weekend, when ILA is open to the general public, the ILA Talent Hub also awaits trade show visitors. Workshops and an interactive programme of stage events invite children from the age of eight to discover the fascinating world of aerospace.

31 Jan 24. Kromek showcases lead in preventing nuclear and biological disaster. Kromek, the designer and manufacturer of biological and radiological detectors, based in

Sedgefield Co. Durham, held its third annual industry day, “Kromek Futures” at the Royal

Academy of Engineering in London on 25th January, showcasing its range of products

designed to reduce the fallout from emerging biological and nuclear threats.

Kromek Futures brought together industry experts, end users, politicians and academics from around the world to discuss the latest trends in both biological and radiological

detection. The audience in the room also heard from partners in Ukraine, Belgium, the USA, and Canada and learned more about the need for, and application of, detectors in current world conflicts.

The scale of nuclear and radiological threats to the world were highlighted in a keynote address by nuclear analyst Dr Bahram Ghiassee, a Fellow at the Henry Jackson Society and one of the leading voices in the field in the UK. He comprehensively outlined the nuclear and radiological threats from dirty bombs being made from nuclear waste in Ukraine; Russia deploying tactical nuclear bombs; North Korean weapons trials; Iran’s nuclear programmes;

as well as nuclear states which are currently not signatories of the international test ban treaty – India, Pakistan, and Israel.

US Biosecurity specialist Kevin Flyangolts, Canada’s leading biological/bacterial warfare scientist Chad Stratilo and Jamie Marsay, Kromek’s Head of Biotechnology, described what is required for real time bio-surveillance and evolutions in the ability to detect and sequence

novel pathogens, in order to prevent a future Covid-19-like pandemic. This could emerge, they said, from either a lab leak, an evolving animal virus, or be engineered by a rogue state or terrorist group.

On the radiological side, the European Union’s Counterterrorism Policy Adviser Radoslaw

Olszewski, Ukrainian nuclear physicist Oleg Brazhiy and Kromek’s Commercial Director for Radiological, Nuclear Products Craig Duff, elaborated on how Kromek’s suite of radioactive isotope detectors are being used in various applications in both security and defence settings.

Across both the biological and radiological sectors, the clear theme which emerged from the day was the growing instability and the need for innovation in preventing and mitigating disaster.

30 Jan 24. Bahrain International Airshow (BIAS) is putting defence and security in the spotlight of its 2024 event, taking place 13-15 November.

The last two years has seen Bahrain reinforce relationships with global partners. In September 2023, Bahrain signed the Comprehensive Security Integration and Prosperity Agreement with the US in September last year, which will see enhanced cooperation across a wide range of areas, from defence and security to emerging technology, trade, and investment.

Organised by the Bahrain Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications and the RBAF in association with Farnborough International, BIAS has been designed to reflect aerospace and defence industry demands, in addition to Bahrain’s exponential development, and will harness global expertise to provide crucial thought leadership and insight.

Excitement is mounting as World Defense Show 2024, under the esteemed patronage of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, confirms a growing list of air and land assets arriving for the event in February. The air assets include established mission aircraft, fighter jets, helicopters, UAVs and the latest electric aircraft, while armored vehicles and tanks, will be shown on the land side. This unique collection of manned and unmanned technology will form an effective showcase of the capabilities of future multi-domain operations.

Other combat aircraft taking to the skies daily include the carbon fiber turboprop Calidus B250 light attack aircraft, the distinctive delta-winged Eurofighter Typhoon, the French Dassault Rafale C, and two roaring F-15s, while the Pakistan Air Force brings the thunder in the form of three JF-17 Thunder multirole combat aircraft. There will be daily displays of UAV capabilities, with the Red Cat Teal2, Firejet M180 and Skydio X10D all demonstrating their unique proficiencies.

Calidus also appears in the daily land demonstrations with the 8 x 8 Wahash multi-role armored vehicle, alongside the Humvee Saber Light Tactical Vehicle, SAMI’s Obaya and Storm II vehicles and the all-wheel drive off-road Tatra Tactic truck.

Among the 70 land assets on display in the show’s expansive courtyard area are a range of vehicles from Otokar, Terradyne, Chrystler, Oshkosh, Saab, GM and Nexter.

Scheduled for Feb. 7 at AUSA headquarters in Arlington, Virginia, the Hot Topic is scheduled to feature speakers such as Lt. Gen. Heidi Hoyle, deputy Army chief of staff for logistics, G-4; Maj. Gen.
