05 Jan 23. Advancing JADC2: Second SITE Summit Includes FVEY Partners.
The Joint Staff J6 sponsored a second Security Interoperability in the Tactical Environment (SITE) Summit Dec. 14-16, hosted at the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) Headquarters in Maryland.
The three-day event brought together stakeholders from the Department of Defense (DoD), including services, combatant Commands, and defense agencies to further efforts in advancing Zero Trust initiatives. Additionally, underscoring J6’s commitment to “Collaborative C2”, the SITE Summit expanded participation to include FVEY partner nations – Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.
Zero Trust is a network security framework requiring all users to be authenticated, authorized, and continuously validated while accessing and using network resources. It is not a product or program but a paradigm shift for the DoD in response to vulnerabilities exposed by high-level breaches. It is also essential to delivering secure, data-centric Joint All-Domain Command and Control (JADC2) capabilities.
Using the DoD Zero Trust Strategy as its foundation, the overarching goal of the SITE Summits is to identify the requirements for interoperability. Participants heard from stakeholders who presented their approaches to tactical Zero Trust implementation. The Summit used breakout sessions to engage in more focused conversations among subject matter experts. The United Kingdom and Australia specifically shared with the forum how their nations are approaching the development of their own Zero Trust frameworks.
One key outcome of the Summit is the collaborative effort between the Joint Staff J6 and the DoD CIO Zero Trust Portfolio Management Office to develop an addendum to the existing Zero Trust Strategy.
Representatives at every level from the Office of the Secretary of Defense to the Joint Staff, Combatant Commands, Combat Support Agencies, and Services, share ideas, synchronize efforts, and establish a united way forward that centers on advancing data security capabilities for the joint warfighter. As the United States military pursues digital modernization and innovation – across departments, services, and countries – it will continue to capitalize on forums like the SITE Summit to promote a shared understanding of how to advance JADC2. “I hope Lima ’23 will be as successful as the Defence Services Asia Exhibition (DSA) and National Security Asia (Natsec Asia) held last year.
“I call on all parties to work together to make this exhibition a success, which was last held in 2019 before the outbreak of Covid-19 hit the country,” he said when speaking in conjunction with the 2023 Defence Minister’s mandate event at the Wisma Pertahanan Auditorium, here on Thursday (Jan 5).
The Lima exhibition was last organised in 2019 and then postponed due to the country being hit by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Meanwhile, Mohamad also expressed hope that the National Task Force (NTF), which was disbanded on Dec 31 last year, would be reinstated, as it was seen to play an important role in strengthening and defending national security continuously in the future.
He said the matter was brought up in a recent Cabinet meeting for the government’s consideration and action, after the “Op Benteng” under the NTF achieved success in ensuring security at the national border and curbing the entry of illegal immigrants, thus curbing the spread of Covid-19.
Mohamad said the Defence Ministry (Mindef) and the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) were also committed to continuing the implementation agenda of the Defence White Paper for the period 2021-2030, including the publication of follow-up documents for the national defence and security industry policy, the defence action plan and the national defence investment plan.
He added that the implementation of the Defence White Paper will be supported by the Mindef Strategic Plan 2021-2025.
“In order to ensure the success of this agenda, the cooperation of all Mindef and MAF personnel is essential. Work responsibly to ensure that the ministry’s main performance indicators can be achieved this year,” he said.
Also present at the event were Deputy Defence Minister Adly Zahari; Mindef secretary-general Datuk Seri Muez Abd Aziz, and Chief of Defence Force Gen Tan Sri Affendi Buang. (Source: Google/https://www.theedgemarkets.com/)
