The UK Simplified Technical English Working Group (UKSTEWG) is a group of representatives from leading UK organisations and companies that use Simplified Technical English (STE). Call to Action: Engineering Support – Digital Inspection RFI – 22 September 2022 – 10.00-11.00
Aim: Call to action for industry to support a market analysis of digital inspection use cases and technology.
Task Summary: This task will assist the Engineering Support Transformation (EST) team in evaluating the range of use cases and technologies that use digital scanning capabilities for inspection maintenance and creation of digitised engineering drawings. This will help inform prioritised investment and development of policy for digital engineering and inspection.

TD-Info Town Hall Meeting – 28 September – 10.45-13.00 – Active Conference Centre, Thornbury BS35 3JB
The Team Defence Executive Team meet monthly to guide the broad portfolio of TD-Info activities.
Recently, the team agreed to trial a quarterly “townhall” session. At these sessions, we will have presentations on specific activities from those involved and update members on wider progress from the TDI portfolio. This will be a physical meeting at Thornbury Leisure Centre and an agenda will be issued over the next few weeks. Please register your plans to attend so we can monitor numbers for the space.

TD-Info Futures: Low Carbon Bases Workshop – 6 October – 10.00-14.00 – Frazer-Nash Consultancy, Narrow Quay House, Bristol, BS1 4QA
The aim of this workshop is to explore how the carbon footprint of deployed operational bases can be reduced. The task is to increase understanding of Defence’s operational infrastructure carbon footprint and how through design, commercially available solutions and emerging technology low carbon deployments can be realised. Team Defence Information developing support for MOD DE&S Future Capability Group (FCG)
TD-Info continues to actively support and assist the FCG in kick-starting key initiatives identified jointly by DE&S and MOD Front Line Commands (FLCs), this is called the Open Innovation Laboratory (OIL). OIL in summary – Joint Strategy: Coherent, thought collaboration focal point for Industry engagement, consistent messaging, and communication across industry sectors About: Command focused and sponsored problems/opportunities that are outcome based to enable exploitation and acquisition of products, upgrades, and services. How? By the exploitation and utilization of the most appropriate existing Working Group or community Collaborating with: MOD problem owners and funders, Defence Primes and OEMs, Established tier suppliers, Solution architects and systems integrators, other sector supply chains, SMEs. Current activities and those at the early planning stage include:
- Application Programme Interfaces for Robotic & Autonomous Systems (API4RAS) Task – Team Defence Information is producing a paper to generate collaboration and a call to action around Application Programme Interfaces for Robotic & Autonomous Systems (API4RAS). Through collaboration, diversity of thought and learning from across sectors we will generate valuable insight to inform FCG’s direction around Modular Open Systems Approaches to robotics and automation in the battlefield. We will deliver our findings before the end of the year so please get involved, simply track our progress, or just read and exploit the outputs.
- High Value Manufacture Centre of Expertise – The launch event of the HVM CoE was hosted at AMRC Sheffield. With a broad range of attendees from across MOD, industry, and academia the discussions have helped shape the CoE direction and areas for investigation. Future engagement will be facilitated through the creation of a community of interest that will be facilitated by TD-Info OIL. Immediate main effort will be delivering Additive Manufacturing (AdM) as a service (Project TAMPA), supporting the Challenge Workstream and co-chairing the digital thread. Future topics will include Advanced Materials, Composites & Light Weighting; Advanced Manufacture; In-Service Support; and Digital Thread. The next HVM CoE will convene in October.
- Operational Energy (OpEn) COE – The OpEn COE is investigating a range of energy vectors. The intent is to help inform Defence decisions on energy transition. This engagement will help understand different sectoral approaches and how they might apply in a deployed operational energy context. Previous COE engagements have investigated battery technologies and power management. The next engagement will bring together different views on Hydrogen. Details are being finalised and registration for the event will open shortly.
- Agile Commercial Practices – Accessing talent and contracting for outcomes to deliver sprints and enable iterative development calls for new approaches to contracting. Earlier in August 22 small focus group workshops took place imparting knowledge of different commercial framework approaches. The best practice and pitfalls of each were captured and will be used to inform FCG route to market options.

Defence Digital Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) Industry Day – details to follow
Defence Digital are showcasing approaches to enable SMEs, alongside larger industry partners, to work more effectively with them in a by-invitation, industry day (expected late October/early November but venue and timings will be announced soon.) Led by AVM David Arthurton and senior leaders from across Defence Digital, the day will outline latest developments including presentations by Commercial-X and updates on the progress of the Foundry. Defence Digital are in the planning stages for their Defence Artificial Intelligence Centre (DAIC)
Defence Digital and will be inviting businesses to work with them to develop the foundations upon which DAIC will be built. Amongst early activities proposed are the drafting of production and assurance models – more will follow. The Joint Economic Data Hub (JEDHub) seeks UK-listed companies that produce defence goods and services for the UK MOD, international governments, or other businesses to complete their survey by 31 October 2022.
The Joint Economic Data Hub (JEDHub), based in the UK Defence Solutions Centre, is a collaborative initiative to improve understanding of the defence sector’s contribution to the UK economy. The survey, hosted on an all-new digital platform, will capture data on turnover, employment, supply chains and workforce demographics within the sector. The findings from the survey will support the 2022 JEDHub Annual Economic Report. Click here to complete the survey.

Porton Down in Wiltshire is home to two British Government facilities – the MOD’s Defence Science & Technology Laboratory (DSTL) and the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) alongside Porton Biopharma Ltd which is co-located with the UKHSA.
It is also the location of the Porton Science Park which was established in 2018 to develop into a major centre of excellence in Life Sciences, Biotechnology and Defence Technologies. The Science Park is now also expanding to support and promote innovation and collaboration in science and technology.
In hosting the first event of its kind at this venue, event organisers Nu-Tech Exhibitions + Events are inviting ‘expressions of interest to exhibit’ from companies with supply chain products and areas of expertise that may be able to support these key organisations.
