15 Dec 09. DSEi renames to reflect growing importance of security sector DSEi, Europe’s leading integrated exhibition for the land, sea and air defence and security industries, is undergoing a subtle but significant name change. Clarion Events, the organisers of DSEi, have renamed the event Defence & Security Equipment International. Hitherto the exhibition has been entitled Defence Systems & Equipment International and the new name reflects an important shift that has been taking place in the defence arena in recent times. “Security capabilities are becoming as important to armed forces around the world as defence capabilities have traditionally been,” explains DSEi’s Exhibition Director, Sally de Swart. “At this year’s exhibition 460 exhibitors – more than a third of the total exhibitor base – declared an interest in security products and technologies and many were taking the opportunity to showcase them.”
The move will also build on the close relationship DSEi has with UKTI DSO, which also covers both defence and security remits. Many of the international delegations that are invited by UKTI DSO are interested in both security and defence capabilities so this move will help to maintain the high levels of attendance by delegations that the show is renowned for. DSEi 2011 takes place from 13 to 16 September, 2011 at ExCeL. DSEi’s new website can be viewed at www.dsei.co.uk
BATTLESPACE Comment: In our DSEI Report we foretold this change! (See: BATTLESPACE DSEI SHOW NEWS Vol.09 ISSUE 05, 14 September 2009, DSEI – CONFRONTING A CHANGING WORLD By Julian Nettlefold). 14 Sep 09. The 9/11 attacks which took place during DSEI in 2001 changed the manner by which Governments conduct procurements of defence and security items. Up to that point there was a clear dividing line between defence and security items as there was for Exhibitions and Conferences. The changing world was reflected in the content of the stands but not in the title of DSEi this year. The run up to the 2012 Olympics will see a huge demand by the UK Government to see and purchase the best equipment available to keep the UK’s citizens and visitors alike, safe from terrorist attack. The name could be changed to DEFENCE SYSTEMS (AND SECURITY) EQUIPMENT INTERNATIONAL to reflect this change. John Reed’s excellent piece run in our Day 1 Issue (See: BATTLESPACE DSEI SHOW NEWS Vol.9 ISSUE 1 PREVIEW, 04 September 2009, ROGUES, FAILURES, RESOURCES, TWITTER AND BLUE SKY) said it all and described the changing world of twitter and cyber warfare.
