11 Nov 09. Cyprus: Service Presence. A memorial to Service personnel killed during the EOKA Campaign was unveiled in Kyrenia on 8 Nov 09.
The Prime Minister announced (11 Nov 09) that the UK had made a conditional offer to the UN to cede just under half of the Sovereign Base Area (SBA) land to a unified Cyprus.
Comment: The EOKA Campaign was deemed to have lasted from 1 Apr 55 to 18 Apr 59, during which time 361 Service personnel were recorded as ‘fatalities by conflict’. [EOKA is a Greek acronym for National Organisation of Cypriot Struggle.]
The SBA of Akrotiri and Dhekelia are sovereign British territory, covering 98 square miles. The SBA are purely military in nature. While 45 square miles could be ceded without difficulty, the MoD and the Foreign Office will wish to retain the remainder (for fairly obvious ‘classified’ reasons).
