EXHIBITIONS AND CONFERENCES

May 09. ENGINE AS A WEAPON III – MARRYING FUTURE COMBAT SYSTEMS AND MARINE PLATFORMS

Building on the successes of previous Engine As A Weapon Symposiums in
2004 and 2006, the 2009 international symposium aims to further identify
and explore the challenges of marrying future combat systems and
maritime platforms to provide the completely integrated fighting
organism.

With its theme ‘seamless systems – can we rise to the challenge of
integrating complex combat and marine systems?’ the two day event is
organised by the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology
(IMarEST) and supported by the Royal Aeronautical Society. It is being
held at Action Stations within the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, UK on
Tuesday 23 and Wednesday 24 June 2009 with sponsorship from BMT Defence
Services, BAE Systems, Converteam, the Office of Naval Research Global
and Ultra Electronics.
“This year’s symposium will provide a unique opportunity to raise
awareness and understanding in the combat and marine systems communities
of each other’s responses to a background of continual advances,”
explains Cdr Matt Bolton RN, Ministry of Defence, UK, the Symposium
Chairman. “These range across Naval design relating to future surface
combatants, submarines and autonomous maritime vehicles. Drawing on
recent designs, development programmes and operational experiences, our
symposium will challenge the power-processing divide and explore the
future of platform and combat systems that will enable complex system
integration.
“Engine As A Weapon III provides the only opportunity for Marine and
Combat Systems designers, scientists, engineers, managers and students
to explore together the significant integration challenges of future
Naval platform design,” he adds. “The maritime sector is not alone in
facing these challenges as related developments are ongoing within the
air and land environments and so this year’s event will also be relevant
to those involved in the design of future aircraft and land vehicles.”
This year’s symposium has attracted speakers from Canada, The
Netherlands, Puerto Rico, UK, and USA to discuss and debate future
combat systems; future platform systems; power systems; and complex
system integration. Discussion on 23 June can continue at the symposium
reception in the interesting setting of HMS Warrior the first
iron-hulled, armour-plated warship, built for the Royal Navy and
launched in 1860. Both within the working day and at its social events
Engine As A Weapon III provides invaluable networking opportunities
between government, industry and academia.
The full programme for the symposium, which is accredited for Continuing
Professional Development (CPD) is now available on the IMarEST website
at www.imarest.org/events and from the Institute at 80 Coleman Street,
London EC2R 5BJ, UK. Tel: +44 (0)20 7382 2655; Fax: +44 (0)20 7382 2667;
