Jul 08. This year’s Skandia Cowes Week will provide the first competitive challenge for the newly formed ‘INJURED SOLDIERS SAILING INITIATIVE’ (ISSI). The initiative, nicknamed ‘Toe in the Water’ has been set up to use sailing as a vehicle to re-inspire the injured servicemen and woman currently treated at Headley Court, the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre. Co-funded by Microlinkpc and the Help for Heroes charity, the ‘Toe in the Water’ crew will be made up of 4 or 5 injured soldiers, 6 able-bodied crew and a physiotherapist and will compete onboard a A40RC in IRC class 1 from Saturday 2nd until Wednesday 6th August. The project has already attracted the support of some of the UK’s hottest sailing talents including Vendée Globe open60 favourite, Brian Thompson, who will be assisting the team in their preparation by coaching the team in the days leading up to the regatta.
