ELECTRIC BOAT COMPANY TO PROVIDE ASSISTANCE TO ASTUTE PROGRAMME
21 Feb 03. In our ‘BATTLESPACE ALERT Vol.5 ISSUE 2, January 28th 2002 BAE SET TO WIN MAJOR PART OF CVF’, we reported that General Dynamics’ Electric Boat Division were to become involved in the Astute programme.
We suggested that GD may be looking at Barrow as a possible takeover target. Dick Evans, Chairman of BAE SYSTEMS told BATRTLESPACE yesterday that, “In order to maintain progress on the programme, General Dynamics Electric Boat Division (GD) will provide design assistance to reinforce the project team. This will enable the Astute project team to take advantage of lessons GD learned in computer-aided design on major U.S. submarine programmes.”
He said that the Barrow facility and its competence in nuclear submarine building was on e of the most important strategic assets of the UK MoD and would remain in UK ownership. He also said that the current costings for the Astute programme were less than its US counterpart.
However, this agreement raises the possibility of further co-operation between the two companies for other projects. Evans stressed that with the successful conclusion of the CVF, Type 45 and now Astute contracts, BAE could now establish a world-beating shipbuilding activity in the UK, with exports providing a major thrust.
