01 May 19. Following the sacking of UK Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson today (See BATTLESPACE ALERT Vol.21 ISSUE 09 01 May 2019, UK Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson sacked over Huawei leak – Penny Mordaunt Appointed), BATTLESPACE understands that a written request has been sent to Met Police Commissioner Cressida Dick, with a copy to the Cabinet Secretary, requesting a criminal investigation ‘following the news that Gavin Williamson has been sacked from the Government due to his conduct in relation to a leak from the National Security Council.’
The letter requests Cressida Dick CBE, QPM, to ‘open a criminal investigation to ascertain whether the actions of Mr Williamson constitute a breach of the Official Secrets Act, given that the leak originated from the National Security Council and related to highly-sensitive information.’
BATTLESPACE Comment: Previous leak enquiries suggest that it will be difficult to get evidence without an admission. The challenge will be getting Cabinet Secretary Sir Mark Sedwell’s interview notes without a Court Order.
