The Polish Armaments Agency (AA) signed a contract with WB Group on the Gladius 2 strike-reconnaissance unmanned aircraft system (UAS) on the first day of the International Defence Industry Exhibition MSPO 2022 being held in Kielce from 6 to 9 September. 15 Sep 22. Saab Receives Orders from FMV Regarding Submarine Upgrades. Saab has received new orders from FMV regarding submarine upgrades. The orders include a life-time extension of HMS Södermanland, as well as new batteries and battery development. The total order value is SEK 470m. The life-time extension means that the submarine HMS Södermanland will receive around 50 modifications, prolonging and enhancing her operability for a further six years. The orders also include an exchange of batteries for the Swedish Navy’s current submarine fleet, as well as a project focusing on battery development, to ensure capabilities both at present and long-term. 13 Sep 22. MDA Ltd. (TSX: MDA), a leading provider of advanced technology and services to the rapidly expanding global space industry, today announced it has been selected by Airbus OneWeb Satellites, LLC (AOS) to design and build Ka-Band steerable antennas. The MDA antennas will be integrated into the portfolio of Arrow commercial small satellites manufactured by AOS. MDA technology has been integrated into more than 350 satellite missions to date, with more than 2,000 antenna subsystems and 3,000 electronic subsystems on approximately 850 satellites currently in orbit. 13 Sep 22. Rocket Factory Augsburg AG (RFA) officially signs the contract with ESA under the Boost! – ESA’s Commercial Space Transportation Services and Support program. Both parties are thus continuing the commercialization of European space transportation and challenging established processes. The contract was implemented in a record eight weeks from RFP receipt to contract signing. The signing follows the German Aerospace Center’s (DLR) microlauncher competition, which RFA won in April 2022. As part of the DLR microlauncher competition, DLR announced RFA as the winner of the 2022 round in April. The prize is worth 11 m euros, which will now be implemented via Boost!. Within this framework, the German government and ESA will be an anchor customer on RFA ONE. DLR will place payload(s) of up to 150 kilograms on each of the first two launches, for which institutions and companies from Europe can apply via the currently running announcement of opportunity.

Drone detection specialist DroneShield reports its first contract to deploy its DroneSentry counter drone system at a US international airport. This is the first permanent deployment of DroneSentry at a US airport, says the press release. The name and location of the airport is undisclosed. The DroneSentry system configuration provides advanced detection capability, in compliance with current US legislation for civilian airports. The deployed system includes DroneShield’s RfOne passive long-range drone detection sensors integrated with DroneSentry-C2 command-and-control enterprise software. Under the terms of this 5-year contract, KBR will provide maintenance and sustainment support and data analytics to ensure continuity of operations at 23 AFHE sites worldwide. 15 Sep 22. Tomahawk Robotics announced the award of the Autonomy and Robotics Enhanced Multi-Domain Infantry Squad (ARTEMIS) program through the Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory (MCWL). The $6.5m award spans activities and deliveries scheduled from 2022 through 2024. The ARTEMIS program builds on capabilities delivered under Tomahawk Robotics’ existing Radio Agile Integrated Device (RAID) contract with MCWL. With the ARTEMIS contract, Tomahawk Robotics will integrate six additional unmanned systems and several ground radios used by the US Marine Corps into the Kinesis Ecosystem. 12 Sep 22. NASA picks Axiom to make spacesuits worn on moon. NASA has awarded Axiom Space a US$228.5m contract to design and manufacture the spacesuits that will be worn by astronauts when they return to the moon. The company beat off competition from Collins Aerospace to secure the deal, which will also include the creation of supporting equipment. NASA’s Artemis III mission to send humans to the lunar surface is currently scheduled for 2025 but testing will begin next month with the Artemis I uncrewed launch of the same rocket and spacecraft. The blast-off has been twice scrubbed due to cooling issues on its engines and a liquid hydrogen leak, but should proceed in the next few weeks. Future task orders that fall under this contract will include recurring moon landings, the development of spacesuits for low-Earth orbit outside the ISS usage and other special studies. 12 Sep 22. LeoLabs to provide space awareness services to US government. The Australian-based company will provide the Department of Commerce with tracking, monitoring and collision avoidance services that utilise an international network of radars. The contract comes as the U.S Department of Commerce has signed an agreement with the Department of Defense to cooperate on a new space traffic management system. The Department of Commerce was given the responsibility for tracking civil and commercial spacecraft in 2018, to allow the Department of Defense to focus on managing growing threats to U.S military satellites. Leolabs currently operates six radar arrays across four international locations, with operations to begin at two more locations by the end of the year. These are the Western Australian Space Radar located near the town of Collie, Western Australia, and the Azores Space Radar in Portugal. 14 Sep 22. The US Army has awarded a Phase II contract to technology start-up LiquidPiston to develop its Hybrid Electric X-Engine (HEXE) propulsion system. Worth $1.7m, the contract is part of the Army’s plan to achieve Future Tactical Unmanned Aircraft System (FTUAS) vertical take-off and landing (VTOL). This requires the propulsion system to deliver fuel-efficient power and enhanced take-off and inflight capabilities, ensuring compatibility with military-grade heavy fuels. Awarded by the USAF’s Cryptologic and Cyber Systems Division, the contract has an estimated value of $22.9m. As part of this contract, the company will design, develop and deliver a high assurance Inline Media Encryptor (IME) for the service’s classified DAR. This technology will safeguard the majority of the USAF’s crewed and uncrewed platforms that seek DAR encryption. In order to secure the digitally stored dataset across the USAF’s crewed and uncrewed systems, the IME technology will use an integrated approach. 16 Sep 22. The Brazilian armed forces acquire 27 H125 helicopters. The Brazilian armed forces, through the Combat Aircraft Programme Coordinating Committee (COPAC), have acquired 27 single engine H125 helicopters to boost the training capacity of the Brazilian Navy and the Air Force. The H125 will be produced in the H125 final assembly line located in Itajubá, Brazil at Helibras’ factory where the H225Ms for the Brazilian armed forces are also assembled. These new helicopters will replace the ageing AS350 and Bell 206 helicopters currently in service with the Brazilian Air Force and the Brazilian Navy respectively.
13 Sep 22. Taiwan signs procurement contract for MQ-9Bs. Taiwan has officially signed a procurement contract to purchase four General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc (GA-ASI) MQ-9B SeaGuardian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The deal, which is worth TWD16.88bn (USD546.3m), was disclosed by Taiwanese legislator Wang Ting-Yu of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) on his Facebook page on 31 August. According to Ting-Yu, the formal procurement contract was signed on 24 August. The contract came into effect on the same day and will be active until the end of December 2029. The first UAV is scheduled to be delivered to the Republic of China Air Force’s (RoCAF’s) Hualien Air Force Base in 2025. The deal was signed after the RoCAF Command Headquarters invited a military delegation from the United States to complete a formal procurement contract at the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT). 12 Sep 22. KT SAT and Thales Alenia Space Sign Contract for KOREASAT 6A Communications Satellite. KT SAT Corporation Ltd. (KT SAT), the leading satellite service provider in South Korea, and Thales Alenia Space, the joint company between Thales (67%) and Leonardo (33%), signed the contract for the KOREASAT 6A communications satellite. KOREASAT 6A will replace the current KORESAT 6 satellite and will deliver both fixed satellite service (FSS) and broadcasting satellite service (BSS) to South Korea. It will be positioned in geostationary orbit at 116° East. As program prime contractor, Thales Alenia Space is responsible for the design, construction, testing and ground delivery of the satellite, followed by orbital positioning and in-orbit testing services. In addition, Thales Alenia Space will train and support the customer’s on-site engineering team and will provide operational assistance throughout the satellite’s lifetime. Built on Thales Alenia Space’s proven Spacebus 4000B2 platform, KOREASAT 6A will be fitted with six BSS transponders and 20 FSS transponders to cover all of South Korea.
