The autonomous solution will enhance the speed, efficiency and safety of combat missions.
24 Jan 22. Jankel secures contract for design and manufacture of crew seating on UK’s Challenger 3 programme. Jankel, a leader in advanced protection systems for military vehicles and their occupants, has won a contract from Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land (RBSL) worth over £2m for the design, development and delivery of 148 vehicle crew seating sets (444 seats) as part of the UK’s Challenger 3 programme. The contract awarded by RBSL – the prime contractor for the Challenger 3 programme – ensures that the British Army will receive world-class seating designed with high-levels of protection for the Commander, Gunner and Loader. The seating systems will be designed and manufactured at Jankel’s UK production facility in Rustington, West Sussex, which currently employs c.150 members of staff including skilled technicians, engineering specialists, plus a team of apprentices, graduates and industry placement students. Jankel estimates that this contract will help to create and/or sustain over 50 jobs. This programme will also help sustain and further develop a variety of skills across the workforce through specialist design, manufacture and fabrication tasks. The contract will be split into development and manufacturing phases. During the development phase, Jankel will undertake the design, development and integration of the new suite of seats into the Challenger 3 Main Battle Tank, followed by verification through design reviews and rigorous testing. Once the new seating has been fully tested, certified and signed off, the manufacture phase is scheduled to commence in 2025.
26 Jan 22. The UK sovereign Land Environment Air Picture Provision (LEAPP) capability, developed by Lockheed Martin UK for the British Army, has its in-service date extended to 2029. The enhanced system will boost the army’s existing command and control capability to ensure it can effectively communicate via Link 16 (the military’s tactical data link network used by NATO), and seamlessly plug into the wider UK defence digital backbone. The legacy capability currently provides early air defence warning through airspace management, surveillance and ground-based command and control (C2). Deployment of the upgraded system will provide operational advantage to users by enabling the sharing of real-time command and control data exchange between users and platforms in the multi-domain integration environment. Historically LEAPP has been deployed across the world with the British Army, and more recently was utilised as a surveillance capability at two high-profile global events hosted by the UK: the G7 2021 Summit in Cornwall and the COP 26 Summit in Glasgow.

In a contract award formally announced on Tuesday 18 January at the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom, the King’s Institute for Applied Security Studies (KIASS) will deliver future command and staff academic provision for the Royal College of Defence Studies (RCDS) in London, and the Joint Services Command & Staff College (JSCSC) and Army Division based at the Defence Academy in Shrivenham. 25 Jan 22. Pennant’s recovery on track. A small-cap company has won a valuable contract to supply simulated training systems for the British Army’s new Apache AH-64E helicopter fleet. Pennant (PEN:35p), an Aim-traded supplier of products and services that train and assist engineers in the defence and civilian sectors, has been named as a key supplier by Boeing in connection with the “Major Programme” the UK company had highlighted in early December. Analysts at brokerage WH Ireland expect that the £9m contract will be spread over three years. Pennant will supply simulated training systems for the British Army’s new 50 Apache AH-64E helicopter fleet as part of Boeing’s contract with the UK’s Ministry of Defence. The Latvian National Armed Forces has awarded a contract to Avon Protection for supply of their market leading CBRN respiratory protection including FM50 mask systems, filters, spares and accessories. Latvia joins other NATO Nations and Partners including Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Lithuania, Norway and The Netherlands in purchasing the FM50 to protect their armed forces. In 2020, the NATO Support and Procurement Agency (NSPA) awarded Avon Protection a 10-year contract to supply a complete CBRN personal respirator system. 26 Jan 22. INVISIO has entered into a five-year framework agreement where the end-customer is the Armed Forces of a European country. The contract, which is with the system integrator of the end-customer’s vehicle modernization program, concerns Racal Acoustics’ new CVC headset, the RA4000 Magna™ with accessories. The value is approximately SEK 275m over the agreement period, but no volumes are guaranteed. The agreement is part of the end-customer’s ongoing modernization program of systems that enable effective communication in heavy vehicles. The contract is a significant strategic success for the new digital RA4000 Magna™ Combat Vehicle Crewman (CVC) headset. The agreement is not the first success for the new and highly advanced RA4000 Magna™ headset. Early in 2021 Racal Acoustics announced that they had signed a 7-year framework agreement for deliveries to the Danish army. The value of the first order from that agreement was USD 4.7m.
28 Jan 22. The joint 6×6 vehicle programme proceeds: Finland to order pre-series vehicles. The Finnish Defence Forces has signed the agreement with Patria to acquire Patria 6×6 vehicles as a pre-series related to the joint 6×6 vehicle programme between Latvia, Finland, Estonia and Patria. The pre-series vehicles will be in test use of the Finnish Defence Forces before the final serial order indicated by the Letter of Intent signed at the end of August 2021.

Roke has been awarded a contract by the Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) of the Swedish Ministry of Defense, to provide electronic warfare (EW) equipment to meet a number of Swedish Armed Forces requirements. Roke has a long history of innovation in the land ISTAR domain and has supplied tactical and strategic EW surveillance and countermeasures equipment to customers around the world. All Roke EW systems now feature a common operations and planning software suite, designed to maximise operator effectiveness and deliver enhanced situational awareness.
25 Jan 22. Teledyne Technologies unit Teledyne FLIR Defence has secured a contract to deliver surveillance systems for the Danish Defence Forces. The company, and its partner Precision Technic Defence Group, have entered into a seven-year framework agreement with the Danish Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organisation (DALO) to provide the systems. The deliveries will include several medium and long-range surveillance systems for land, maritime, and airborne applications. The firms have also secured a service and maintenance contract from the DALO. Over the period of performance, the potential value of the contract is projected to exceed $100m. Thales and Weibel Scientific, a Danish advanced doppler radar manufacturer, signed a contract, for the acquisition of 12 Weibel Xenta short-range ground mission radars for a GBAD solution within the Thales radar portfolio. Rolls-Royce business unit Power Systems has been awarded a contract by Damen to supply its latest-generation integrated platform management system (IPMS) and a condition monitoring system (CMS) to equip the German Navy’s future Type 126 frigates. The U.S. Department of Defense said it has awarded a $11m (9.7m euro) contract to local unmanned aerial vehicles manufacturer AeroVironment Inc on behalf of Kosovo for the purchase of the Puma Long Endurance surveillance drone. AeroVironment, which was the sole bidder in an online auction, was due to complete work on the deal on January 25, the U.S. Department of Defence said in a statement last week. Kosovo will receive 40 units based on an estimated unit cost of $215,000, according to an estimate by U.S. defense news provider Shephard Defense Insight. 25 Jan 22. Rohde & Schwarz will equip the German Navy’s NH90 Multi-Role Frigate Helicopter (MRFH), with SOVERON family airborne radios that include embedded COMSEC. Each aircraft is fitted with three VHF/UHF transceivers plus spares. The navy will receive 31 helicopters – a naval version of the NH90 – that offer close-range protection, anti-surface-warfare (ASuW) und anti-submarine-warfare (ASW), transport, and search and rescue capabilities. The SOVERON family airborne transceiver uses state-of-the-art communications algorithms that were standardized throughout NATO, and particularly for naval applications. The transceiver’s interfaces allow external devices or an external encryption device to be connected and guards the naval distress frequency, thereby remaining future-proof.

The contract award of $169m is for 33 vehicles. US-based defence solutions consultant DCS has secured a $77m contract to offer certain support services to the US Air Force’s (USAF) Air Force Operational Test and Evaluation Centre Fighter Test Services (AFOTEC FTS) programme. 25 Jan 22. The Pentagon’s top IT office issued a nearly $7m contract to develop its zero trust IT architecture, the Department of Defense announced Tuesday. The cyber threat landscape has shifted in recent years, becoming much more dynamic. As a result, traditional defenses have proven to not be up to the test. The federal government has now shifted to what it calls a zero trust model, which assumes networks are already compromised and validates users, devices and data continuously. The contract, awarded to Booz Allen Hamilton, is for Thunderdome, the Defense Information Systems Agency’s implementation of zero trust. The contract is for a six month prototype effort in which the agency will operationally test how to implement its zero trust architecture involving technologies such as Secure Access Service Edge and Software Defined-Wide Area Networks. 21 Jan 22. The Indian Armed Forces has selected Saab’s AT4 weapon system, through a competitive bidding process, for a single-shot weapon. Swedish FFV Ordnance AB, which manages Saab’s ground combat offer in India, signed the contract. Saab noted that the Indian Army and the Indian Air Force will use the AT4 weapon system, and said that the Indian Armed Forces is AT4’s new customer. The latest order includes the AT4CS AST, which can be fired from complex environments such as inside buildings, bunkers, and other urban spaces. 25 Jan 22. Algeria Orders China’s CH-5 Combat Drones. Sources have confirmed the order of half a dozen CH-5 Rainbow combat drones from CASC (China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation). The aircraft will join the CH-3 and 4 already in service. The order will be fully delivered in 2022 from March. This drone, larger and heavier than the CH-4, displays quite similar performance to the American MQ 9 Predator. It can fly 60 hours in a row or 10,000 km without landing while carrying 1 ton of payload (up to 16 anti-tank missiles of the AR-1 and 2 or HJ-12 type. All at an altitude of 9 km. 25 Jan 22. HAL to export Dhruv helicopter to Mauritius. India’s Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has signed a contract with Mauritius for the supply of a single Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH). The contract was announced on 19 January and covers the improved Mk III version, which features an all-glass cockpit, an integrated architecture display and automatic flight control systems. It will be flown by the Mauritius Police Force. This is the second Dhruv for Mauritius after the Indian government loaned a single Dhruv to the country to boost the Coast Guard’s maritime surveillance capabilities. 27 Jan 22. Leonardo confirms Qatar as latest M-346 jet trainer client. Qatar has purchased six Leonardo M-346 jet trainers, the Italian company has said. A spokesman for the firm confirmed the long-rumored acquisition after three of the jets were photographed at a military parade in Qatar. 21 Jan 22. CRF awards new tranche of defence innovation grants. Five cross-industry defence ventures have secured funding to advance the development of new innovations in military technology.
The Defence Innovation Partnership’s Collaborative Research Fund (CRF) has awarded grants totalling just under $750,000 to five R&D projects across South Australia.
The grants include:
- $149,894 for developing a virtual reality tool designed to manipulate digital human mannequins for evaluating ergonomics and human factors — led by the University of South Australia in partnership with the University of Adelaide and Kadego Engineering;
- $149,957 for a framework for addressing design challenges in wargames — led by Flinders University with partners the Department of Defence, University of Adelaide, University of NSW and DEWC Systems;
- $150,000 for deep sensing: machine learning-enhanced optical fibre hydrophone — led by the University of South Australia with partners the University of Adelaide, Acacia Systems and Arkwright Technologies;
- $149,999 for developing neuroscience-based approaches to assessing and enhancing human cognitive performance in challenging operational environments — led by Flinders University with partners the University of South Australia, Technology for Education Solutions, Department of Defence (Army) and Department of Defence (Defence Science and Technology Group); and
- $150,000 for advancing SOCRETIS (SOCial REasoning Tool and Interactive System): an AI-enabled collaborative reasoning aid for the information environment — led by the University of Adelaide with partners Insight Via Artificial Intelligence, University of South Australia and the Department of Defence.
