11 Nov 09. The Italian Army has awarded a contract to Selex Sistemi Integrati to supply five field artillery acquisition radars. Under the €83m contract, the company will integrate the artillery hunting radar (ARTHUR) systems with the army’s SIACCON command and control systems. The Saab Microwave Systems-developed ARTHUR is a battlefield surveillance system that detects and promptly responds to the sources of enemy fire. The system records critical information about enemy artillery and transmits it to a dedicated command and control centre for quick reaction. The easy deployment and mobility in the field allows the system to perform in all weather conditions. In addition, the radars can cooperate with unmanned aerial vehicles and be integrated with Nato command and control systems. The Italian Army will use the firefinder systems on out-of-area missions to enhance safety on the battlefield. Deliveries will run throughout the three-year period of the contract.
