09 Jul 24. NATO has placed an order for Stinger anti-aircraft missiles worth almost $700m in the name of several member states, the alliance’s Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said on Tuesday. “Just today, the (NATO procurement agency) NSPA signed a new multinational contract for Stinger missiles worth almost $700m,” he told a gathering of defence industry leaders on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Washington. The last contract for Stinger missiles, made by RTX’s (RTX.N) Raytheon division, was awarded in May 2022 when the U.S. Army contracted $625m worth of the anti-aircraft missiles to replenish stocks sent to Ukraine. The shoulder-fired Stinger missiles have been in hot demand in Ukraine, where they have successfully stopped Russian assaults from the air, and in neighbouring European countries which fear they may also need to beat back Russian forces. Exail, a global leader in naval navigation, has been selected by Anschutz, a leading German company specializing in ship navigation systems, to supply Marins inertial navigation systems (INS) for the Royal Navy’s T31 Inspiration-class general-purpose frigates. Exail’s high-end Marins INS will provide the T31 frigates with uninterrupted and highly accurate navigation data, regardless of GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) availability or external disruptions. 09 Jul 24. The industrial working group of DiehlDefence and Nammo AS (ARGE DiNa 155mm) received a large-volume order from the German Armed Forces for the production and delivery of 155mm #artillery projectiles. Diehl Defence CEO Helmut Rauch together with Nammo Executive Vice President Vegard Sande signed the framework agreement with Annette Lehnigk-Emden, President of the BAAINBw on July 9 in Coblenz.

 

10 Jul 24. Hanwha Aerospace signed a contract with Romania over the supply of 54 K9 Self-Propelled Howitzers (SPH) and 36 K10 Ammunition Resupply Vehicles (ARV). Signed on 9th July by Hanwha Aerospace and the Romanian Ministry of National Defence, the contract also includes ammunition and support vehicles both on tracks and wheels. The contract is valued about $1bn.   Romania has become the 10th customer nation operating the 155mm/52-calibre K9 SPH. Among the NATO members, Romania is the sixth K9 user nation following Türkiye, Poland, Norway, Finland and Estonia. Following Norway and Australia, Romania will also be the third global operator of the K10, which enables a fully automated re-supplying capability to maximize the efficiency of artillery forces.

 

11 Jul 24. Poland orders more Rosomak APCs. On 8 July the Polish Armaments Agency (AA) ordered 58 more Rosomak 8×8 armoured personnel carriers (APCs) from a consortium led by Huta Stalowa Wola (HSW) and also consisting of Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa (PGZ), Rosomak, and WB Electronics. In a press release later the same day, the AA valued the contract at PLN2.6 bn (USD660 m), with deliveries taking place in 2026–27. The contract includes a logistics package with spare parts. It is the second implementation contract for Poland’s Rosomak procurement. The APCs will be integrated with the ZSSW-30 remote controlled weapon station (RCWS) armed with a Bushmaster Mk 44S 30 mm automatic cannon and a dual Spike LR (long range) anti-tank guided missile launcher. The cannon can be fired in automatic and semi-automatic modes, and uses five different types of ammunition, including programmable munition. A modified UKM-2000C 7.62 mm co-axial machine gun is coupled with the cannon. The ZSSW-30 features a domestically produced fire-control system, sights, and gun and sight stabilisation. The RCWS is designed to be used to combat armoured targets and enemy objects and fortifications and also for fire support. 11 Jul 24. Raytheon Technologies said on Thursday that it has been awarded a $1.2bn contract to supply Germany with additional Patriot air and missile defense systems. The new order marks the second Patriot order for Germany this year. (Source: Reuters)

 

09 Jul 24. Saab has received an order from the Lithuanian Ministry of Defence (MoD) for deliveries of Saab’s Mobile Short Range Air Defence (MSHORAD) solution. The order value is approximately SEK 1.3bn and deliveries will take place 2025-2027. The recent order is placed within a framework agreement between Saab, the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) and the Lithuanian MoD which allows Lithuania to place orders for Saab’s mobile short-range air defence missile solution RBS 70 NG. The order includes Mobile Firing Units, Mobile Radar Units, a Command- and Control (C2) System, a training package and the RBS 70 NG trainer. Saab will integrate MSHORAD into JLTV vehicles manufactured by American company Oshkosh before delivery to the customer.

 

12 Jul 24. Thales announces order for new Syracuse IV satcom stations to equip French Army Serval armoured vehicles. The Neptune contract is the latest development in the Syracuse IV ground segment programme, for which Thales is prime contractor. It follows an earlier order for the deployment of satcom stations on French Navy surface vessels and submarines and for the development and production of fixed and mobile stations for land and air forces. These include Mercure on-the-move (OTM) stations for the French Army’s Griffon and Serval vehicles and airborne stations for the French Air Force’s wide-body aircraft. Developed for the French defence procurement agency (DGA), the first version of the Syracuse IV ground segment entered service at the end of 2023. It will provide the French forces with a joint communications capability relying on secure, high-data-rate satcom services with robust protection from jamming, interference, cyberattacks and other threats to guarantee end-to-end connectivity and tri-service interoperability.

09 Jul 24. Rohde & Schwarz secures role in Poland’s Miecznik frigate. In a development for Poland’s maritime defence strategy, Rohde & Schwarz has solidified its position as a partner in the construction of the Miecznik frigates.  The German company, recognised for its communications architectures and electronic support measures (ESM), announced signing a contract with PGZ Stocznia Wojenna. Under the terms of the agreement, Rohde & Schwarz will supply radar and communications ESM (RCESM) systems designed to enhance the operational capabilities of the three multi-role Miecznik frigates. 10 Jul 24. Sweden has signed for 12 new Sikorsky UH-60M Black Hawk medium-lift helicopters to add to the 15 it already operates. The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (Försvarets materielverk: FMV) announced the procurement on 10 July, two months after the US government approved the deal for an estimated USD900 m. Designated HKP 16 in national service, the UH-60M was initially acquired by Sweden in 2012 as a temporary measure to help fill a capability gap for operations in Afghanistan while the country waited on its 18 NHIndustries NH90 helicopters (HKP 14) to be delivered to an operational standard. 09 Jul 24. DRS Network & Imaging Systems LLC, Melbourne, Florida, was awarded a $99,100,000 firm-fixed-price contract for FireCon-Pro Mortar Fire Control Systems hardware and training services. Bids were solicited via the internet with four received. Work locations and funding will be determined with each order, with an estimated completion date of July 28, 2029. 05 Jul 24. Frontgrade Technologies Inc., Exeter, New Hampshire, is receiving modification number P00010 to a previously awarded indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity, firm-fixed-price contract (N00039-18-D-0004). This modification increases the value of the basic contract by $94,107,423 to a new total contract value of $115,850,904. This modification allows for the continued procurement of OE-570 ultra-high frequency antenna systems variants, subassemblies, Mobile User Objective System upgrade kits, system spares, engineering services, and training to fulfill antenna requirements for the Digital Modular Radio Program on various surface ships. This contract was not competitively procured because it is a sole-source acquisition pursuant to the authority of 10 U.S. Code 2304(c)(1) – Only One Responsible Source (Federal Acquisition Regulation subpart 6.302-1). Work will be performed in Exeter, New Hampshire, and is expected to be completed by Dec. 16, 2027. No funds will be obligated at the time of modification award. Oshkosh Defense, LLC, an Oshkosh Corporation (NYSE: OSK) business, announced today that the U.S. Army Contracting Command – Detroit Arsenal (ACC-DTA) placed orders valued at $231.9m for modernized heavy tactical vehicles, kits and kit installs. Under the orders, Oshkosh will produce new Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck (HEMTT) A4 tankers, cargos, wreckers, load handling systems (LHS), Common Bridge Transports (CBT) and Palletized Load System (PLS) A1s. As part of the orders, Oshkosh will also integrate advanced capabilities into the PLS A1 fleet through recapitalization, which is a critical and cost-effective means to modernize the fleet, extend vehicle life, and reduce operating costs. 10 Jul 24, Teledyne FLIR Defense, part of Teledyne Technologies Incorporated (NYSE:TDY), has received a $15m contract through the U.S. Army Contracting Command-Aberdeen Proving Ground (ACC-APG) to deliver more than 150 of its ThermoSight® HISS-XLR weapon sights to a NATO partner country. The contract also includes parts, training, and other in-country support. The ThermoSight® HISS-XLR clip-on thermal weapon sight enables snipers and precision shooters to detect and recognize man-size targets at more than 2,000 meters. Designed to mount on any MILSTD-1913 rail interface in front of an existing scope, the highly portable HISS-XLR can interface with a wide range of day scopes and weapon platforms. Long-range optics coupled with an HD display provide crisp imagery, while portrait orientation compensates for bullet drop at extreme ranges. Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) has been awarded a $4.6m contract by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to develop Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools for dynamic, airborne missions as part of its Artificial Intelligence Reinforcements (AIR) program. This project aims to provide advanced Modeling and Simulation (M&S) approaches and dominant AI agents for live, multi-ship, beyond visual range (BVR) missions. It is a critical step in prioritizing and investing in breakthrough technologies for national security and to meet the evolving needs of customers. DARPA’s AIR program will improve the government-provided baseline models’ speed and predictive performance to better match how the Department of Defense’s systems perform in the real world. 08 Jul 24. The Australian government has announced the acquisition of Switchblade 300 precision loitering munitions. The loitering munition provides “a critical combat edge” and adds to the unmanned “capabilities available to the Australian Defence Force (ADF)”, the Australian Department of Defence (DoD) said on 8 July. Developed by AeroVironment Inc, the Switchblade 300 is a tube-launched, non-recoverable attack loitering munition designed to provide “multidomain operational capability” to military forces. Australia did not specify which variant of the Switchblade 300 it is acquiring. It is likely, however, that the procurement is for the new extended endurance version, the Block 20. This variant is 0.033 m shorter in length compared with the baseline Switchblade 300’s length of 0.495 m. However, the Block 20 aircraft has a larger wingspan (0.05 m greater than the 0.686 m wingspan of the baseline Switchblade 300) and a greater weight (3.27 kg compared with the 2.5 kg weight of the baseline version). 10 Jul 24. Corvus Technology Solutions has secured the contract to build nearly 2,000 vehicle suspension units for the Australian Army’s new Redback infantry fighting vehicle (IFV). Valued at almost $100m, the contract will create over 40 jobs at the company’s Melbourne facility and represents a partnership for the future between Hanwha Defence Australia and Corvus. These suspension units, 14 of which are on each Redback vehicle, improves ride, comfort, and manoeuvrability in the field. 05 Jul 24. IDV signs a contract with the Brazilian Army to provide 420 LMV-BR 2. The Brazilian Army, through the Army Manufacturing Directorate, signed a contract with IDV for the supply of 420 LMV-BR 2 (Light Multirole Vehicle) within a 10-year timeframe. The first units are expected to be delivered in 2026. This new order of LMV-BR 2 vehicles, known in Brazil under the name “Guaicurus”, will be produced in two different variants, either with a Manual Weapon System or a RCWS Weapon System. All vehicles will be equipped with a C2 – Command and Control System. The 420 units of “Guaicurus” will be produced locally in IDV’s plant in Sete Lagoas (MG). The signing of this 10-year contract for LMV-BR 2 vehicles marks another important milestone in the partnership between the Brazilian Army and IDV as it contributes considerably to the growth of the national defence industry and strengthens the strategic development of the Brazilian Ground Forces. The solid collaboration between the Brazilian Army and IDV looks back on a long history, which includes so far the supply of 700 units of the 6×6 amphibious armoured vehicle Guarani as well as 32 units of the LMV-BR. 11 Jul 24. Raytheon Co., Tewksbury, Massachusetts, is awarded a cost-plus fixed-fee contract for the Radar Advanced Signal Processing effort. The total cumulative value of this contract, including a 36-month base period with two 27-month, one 18-month, and one 36-month option periods, is $42,998,434. This contract provides for the development of enhanced radar signal processing capabilities that take advantage of next generation receivers and exciters and computing accelerators for transition into shipboard radars that operate in increasingly harsh environments against challenging targets. Work will be performed in Tewksbury, Massachusetts, and the base period is expected to be completed in July 2027. Fiscal 2024 research, development, test and evaluation (Navy) funds in the amount of $6,866,250 are obligated at time of award and will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year. This contract was competitively procured under long range broad agency announcement (N00014-23-S-B001) entitled “Long Range Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) for Navy and Marine Corps Science & Technology.” Since proposals are received throughout the year under the long-range BAA, the number of proposals received in response to the solicitation is unknown. 10 Jul 24. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has ordered four additional Airbus A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft for the Royal Saudi Arabia Air Force (RSAF). The first of these aircraft will enter into conversion at the beginning of 2026; they will enter into service and join the RSAF in 2027 to carry out air-to-air refuelling and transport missions. The contract also includes a logistics support package with spare parts, training services and service support for the new four aircraft. All the RSAF A330 MRTT are configured with hose and drogue pods, boom system and also refuelling receptacle, which allows the A330 MRTT to be refuelled from boom-equipped tankers.

BAE Systems received multiple contracts totaling $111m to provide the Second-generation, Anti-jam, Tactical, Ultra-high Frequency Radio for NATO, or SATURN waveform, to the Republic of Korea (ROK). As part of the country’s national communications modernization strategy, SATURN will bring secure and interoperable command and control capabilities to the ROK’s military for fixed-wing and rotary aircraft. As the modern-day battlespace becomes more sophisticated, advancements in tactical waveforms are required. BAE Systems’ next-generation software defined radios will leverage SATURN’s fast frequency hopping waveform. SATURN will deliver new advantages to operators who rely on timely and accurate communications to inform key decisions in the field. 09 Jul 24. Uruguay’s Defense Minister, Armando Castaingdebat, confirmed the government’s purchase of six Embraer 314 Super Tucano aircraft. The deal, valued at $100m, will be financed over 10 to 15 years. These aircraft will enhance Uruguay’s air capabilities, which is crucial given the nation’s limited combat aircraft. Currently, Uruguay has only one or two Cessna A-37B Dragonfly planes in service. These planes are part of the 2nd Fighter Squadron, and the country lacks a dedicated attack squadron since retiring the FMA IA-58 Pucará aircraft. Additionally, the government plans to acquire new air surveillance radars. This upgrade aims to secure Uruguay’s borders, which are vulnerable to illegal trafficking by land, air, and sea.. Evolve Dynamics announced a landmark order of its market-leading SKY MANTIS 2 aircraft and accessories package by a defence customer in the Australia and New Zealand region, facilitated by delivery partner Criterion Solutions. The news comes off the back of the agreement signed between Evolve Dynamics and Criterion Solutions earlier this year, which has seen the latter add SKY MANTIS 2 UAS to its customer offering across the police, security and defence sectors in the two countries. 11 Jul 24. Belarus to Buy Chinese FPV-Drones at Inflated Price. The Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Belarus has plans to purchase FPV-drones for its army. By the end of this year, Belarusians want to buy Chimera CX10 10-inch drones from iFlight Chinese company in the amount of only 16 units. They are likely to be used to train operators of FPV-drones of Belarusian army. Belarusian Hajun OSINT project emphasizes two facts. The first is the cost of the drone. Thus, it is planned to spend about 460 thousand Belarusian rubles or approximately 140.5 thousand dollars for 16 drones. This means that one UAV costs about $8,800. At the same time, the price of the Chimera CX10 drone on the iFlight website is $329.99. Even if it includes all the possible equipment, the amount is still eight times lower than the price tag from the Defense Ministry of Belarus – $1,222. According to Belarusian Hajun, this can be explained either by the purchase of additional components or by corruption. The second fact is that the company prohibits to use its drones for “any military purposes.” But the Defense Ministry of Belarus can easily ignore this rule by purchasing drones through intermediaries. This may also explain why the price of drones has risen so much compared to the manufacturer’s price. Speaking about the technical characteristics of this drone, we can highlight the following: its weight is 810 grams without battery; payload is 1.5-2.5 kg; maximum speed is 140 km/h, maximum altitude is 6000 m; maximum hover time is about 40 minutes with a battery without additional load. Work will be performed in Stratford, Connecticut, with an estimated completion date of June 30, 2027. Fiscal 2024 aircraft procurement, Army funds; and Foreign Military Sales (Croatia and Jordan) funds in the amount of $251,483,904, were obligated at the time of the award. 10 Jul 24. Turkish company STM announced on 9 July that an undisclosed African customer has placed the first export order for its Boyga unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The Boyga is an electrically powered unmanned quadcopter with a take-off weight of 17 kg when carrying an 81 mm mortar round that STM says can be dropped on targets accurately from relatively high altitudes due to the ballistic estimation algorithm it has developed. The Boyga has an endurance of 30 minutes when carrying a munition and a maximum flight altitude of 3,000 m, according to the company’s website, which gives different figures for the UAV’s range, from 5 to 10 km. STM quoted its general manager, Özgür Güleryüz, as saying the company’s Kargu quadcopter loitering munition has now been exported to more than 10 countries, the Togan scout UAV has been exported to two African countries, and that the first export order for the Alpagu tube-launched loitering munition was signed in 2023.
