09 Nov 23. Comtech (NASDAQ: CMTL), a global technology leader, announced today, the receipt of a $20.0m order from the company’s UK-based partners, Spectra Group. The order will allow Spectra Group, the appointed regional distributor of Comtech’s Compact Over-the-Horizon Transportable Terminal (COMET), to service multiple orders already received, and several expected follow-on orders from undisclosed customers in the NATO and European regions. Comtech’s feature-rich, network agnostic COMET system is designed to be easily integrated with other Department of Defense (DoD) and coalition tactical, mobile, and fixed communications systems to provide resilient, secure beyond-line-of-sight (BLOS) capabilities in some of the world’s most challenging environments. Rheinmetall Electronics UK has been awarded a £10.6m ($13m) contract by the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) for the delivery and integration of rear-facing camera on the British Army’s Warrior infantry fighting vehicle (IFV) fleet, in order to meet critical safety requirements. The deal itself is stated as being an ‘accelerated procedure’, with the MoD justifying the process due to “reasons of urgency” in that allowing the usual contractual process to be undertaken would “have safety implications” to the Warrior IFV crew while on operations. 10 Nov 23. Babcock signs £750m infrastructure contract. Babcock International Group PLC (“Babcock” or “the Group”), the international defence company, has signed a four-year £750m contract with the UK Ministry of Defence’s (MOD) Submarine Delivery Agency (SDA), to deliver the infrastructure required to support and sustain the UK’s submarines for decades to come. As part of the major infrastructure programme underway at the Devonport site, Babcock will deliver substantial upgrades to existing infrastructure that will support the future capability of the Royal Navy and the UK’s Defence Nuclear Enterprise. The contract for the delivery of infrastructure to support submarine maintenance includes a dock, logistics and modern support facilities, and underpins the wider role Babcock plays in sustaining the entirety of the UK submarine fleet. Crucial to the UK submarine programme, the contract forms part of the site-wide infrastructure upgrade programme at Devonport to enable the ongoing delivery of base maintenance periods and deep maintenance projects for current and future classes of submarine, including nuclear defuel.

Systems Planning and Analysis Inc., of Alexandria, Virginia, is awarded a $90,802,247 cost-plus-fixed-fee contract for Trident II Strategic Weapons System technical support services supporting the Common Missile Compartment program, D5 Life Extension 2 program, Strategic Systems Program (SSP) Facilities Management, Activation and Assessments, and Missile Systems program. This contract also benefits a foreign military sale to the United Kingdom. Fiscal 2023 shipbuilding and conversion (Navy) funds in the amount of $2,977,925; and fiscal 2024 operations and maintenance (Navy) funds in the amount of $700,000, will be obligated upon award. Terma, a Danish leader in advanced technology solutions for defense, is thrilled to announce its significant contribution to the second batch of Type 26 frigates for the British Royal Navy. Terma will be providing ten SCANTER 6000 radars to equip five state-of-the-art Royal Navy Type 26 frigates, bolstering their capabilities for the future. 08 Nov 23. RFA UK (Rocket Factory Ltd) has received £3.5m to support its plans to launch from SaxaVord Spaceport in the Shetland Islands. The announcement comes as UK Science Minister, George Freeman, visits SaxaVord Spaceport to see progress at the site and meet key members of RFA UK. The funding was awarded by the UK Space Agency as part of the European Space Agency (ESA), Boost! Programme, which aims to help innovative companies develop new launch technologies and bring them to market. With the UK contributing as the third nation to the RFA ONE development via C-STS Boost!, RFA AG is the most endorsed commercial launch service development within the C-STS Boost! Programme. RFA UK will use the funding to develop and operate the infrastructure and test equipment needed to enable them to launch them to launch the RFA ONE launch system from SaxaVord Spaceport, planned for Q2 2024. RFA UK and SaxaVord Spaceport anticipate around 90 skilled jobs will be created locally when the spaceport arrives to full operational capability including spaceport operations and administration, integration, testing and launch. A subsidiary of Rocket Factory Augsburg AG (RFA AG), the UK company is headquartered in Grantown-on-Spey, Scotland. RFA AG will have exclusive access to the SaxaVord’s ‘Fredo’ launch pad from where it plans to provide a regular cadence of launch services as one of the spaceport’s anchor customers. Space Forge, based in South Wales, is building the world’s first in-space manufacturing platform that can be returned back to Earth and has been awarded £499,000 as part of a collaborative project with Northrop Grumman under the MOD’s Defence Technology Exploitation Programme (DTEP). 06 Nov 23. KNDS is Modernising Sweden’s Fleet of Main Battle Tanks. The Swedish procurement agency (FMV) has commissioned Krauss-Maffei Wegmann GmbH & Co. KG (KMW) with modernising its fleet of LEOPARD 2 main battle tanks. 44 vehicle systems will be retrofitted by the end of 2026. The agreement, which was signed at the international arms fair AUSA in Washington also includes the option of modernising all of the Swedish army’s LEOPARD 2 main battle tanks. 08 Nov 23. MBDA has finalised an agreement with Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa S.A. (PGZ) for MBDA’s support for PGZ’s delivery of the NAREW air defence programme for the Polish Armed Forces. NAREW will provide Poland with a highly advanced mobile air defence system capable of dealing with modern and future threats out to ranges beyond 40 km, utilising the CAMM-ER missile developed in cooperation between the UK and Italy. The PGZ-NAREW Consortium was awarded the executive contracts for NAREW in September from the Polish Armament Agency. Today’s agreement enables PGZ to implement these executive contracts, valued in excess of £4 bn, by concluding the terms of MBDA’s unprecedented transfer of key technologies and knowledge to PGZ. It enables the PGZ-NAREW Consortium to make more than 1,000 CAMM-ER air defence missiles and over 100 launchers for the NAREW programme in Poland.
06 Nov 23. MilDef has won an order to deliver newly developed hardware to an unnamed European NATO nation. At the same time, MilDef has been entrusted to deliver tactical IT to new strategic projects in both land and air defense, in this nation. The order is a call-off on the current framework agreement and an effect of the nation accelerating the build-up of its defense capabilities. The order is worth SEK 30 m and deliveries are expected to take place in 2024. The 20-year framework agreement with the Armed Forces in an unnamed European NATO nation is about modernizing and digitalizing the country’s defense. MilDef is now starting to deliver tactical IT equipment, such as computers, monitors, network infrastructure and software to the Armed Forces in question. In addition to the actual order of uniquely developed hardware for, for example, battle management systems, MilDef’s involvement in both ground and air defense systems is now deepening.
08 Nov 23. Armenia contracts to buy Indian ZADS C-UAS system to counter Azerbaijan. Unconfirmed press and social media reports circulating in the last several days suggest that Armenia has contracted with India for the supply of an unidentified quantity of the Zen Anti-Drone System (ZADS). The Indian Army awaits delivery of the system, developed by Zen Technologies Limited of Hyderabad, next year under a USD27 m order for 20 units placed in 2021. The fact that the Indian Army has procured the system has been taken as something of an endorsement by Armenia, according to sources close to the alleged transaction, which is said to be valued in the region of USD41 m. 09 Nov 23. The Bundestag’s Budget Committee has approved a contractual change with Airbus DS, the civilian operator to enable the demonstration of German Heron TP drone operations in Germany. The German Heron TP (GHTP) is a so-called Medium Altitude Long Endurance (MALE) drone. This means that it operates at medium altitudes, has a long range and is controlled remotely by a pilot on the ground. With its cameras, it enables permanent, real-time reconnaissance and the monitoring of large sections of terrain. With the drone, military commanders can better assess the situation. Compared to the previously used Heron 1, the GHTP has improved flight characteristics, can deliver reconnaissance results in any weather and can also be armed to support ground forces. With its decision, the Budget Committee has now cleared the way for a six-month demonstration operation of the GHTP project in Germany, in German airspace. The civilian operator Airbus DS Airborne Solutions (ADAS) GmbH provides the aircraft and support services to the Bundeswehr. 06 Nov 23. Sypris Electronics, LLC, a subsidiary of Sypris Solutions, Inc. (Nasdaq/GM: SYPR), received two full rate production follow-on multimillion-dollar contract awards from a U.S. global defense contractor to manufacture advanced integrated electronic warfare and communications avionics system modules for one of the largest Government DoD programs. 08 Nov 23. Taiwan Army orders additional Kestrel anti-tank weapon systems. Taiwan’s Republic of China Army (RoCA) has ordered an additional 5,962 Kestrel individual shoulder-launched anti-tank weapon systems (ATWSs) from state-owned National Chung‐Shan Institute of Science and Technology (NCSIST), a RoCA officer told Janes on 7 November. The new order of 5,962 brings the total number of Kestrels to be procured to 10,962, including 5,000 Kestrels ordered in late 2022, the officer said. The systems will be delivered by November 2025, the officer added. According to the officer, each Kestrel system costs around USD3,000 and the systems are intended to replace ageing 66 mm M72 (Type 1) light anti‐tank weapon systems in-service with the RoCA. The system is “similar to [the] FGM-148 Javelin ATWS but it doesn’t have a fire control subsystem, which makes it much lighter”, the officer said. The RoCA has ordered Kestrel to train the troops on such systems, the officer added. “Kestrel lacks a target tracking mechanism, therefore, troops need to undergo extensive training to manually track targets.” (Source: Janes)

Rheinmetall wins low three-digit million euro order from German government to supply mortar ammunition to Ukraine Rheinmetall has received an order from the German government to supply Ukraine with around 100,000 rounds of 120mm mortar ammunition. The order, worth a figure in the lower-three-digit m-euro range, forms part of a recent €400 m military aid package for the Ukrainian armed forces. Delivery is due to begin shortly and extend over the next two years. With its recent takeover of Spanish ammunition maker Expal, Rheinmetall has further reinforced its already extensive expertise in the field of infantry fire support. China North Industries Corporation (Norinco) has signed a contract with the Royal Thai Army (RTA) to supply its fixed-wing/vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) Sky Saker FX80 unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), the company has confirmed. A Norinco official told Janes on 7 November at the Defense & Security 2023 exhibition in Bangkok that the contract was signed in October and features the delivery of one FX80 system comprising four UAVs and a ground control station. Deliveries to the RTA are expected in 2024, the official added. The value of the deal was not disclosed, but Janes understands it is worth about THB188m (USD5.3m). (Source: UAS VISION/Janes)
