The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has awarded BAE Systems’ FAST LabsTM research and development organization a $14m contract for the Massive Cross Correlation (MAX) program. BAE Systems will develop technology aimed at enabling the deployment of advanced signal processing and computation on a new smaller category of military platforms. Signal processing is at the heart of critical Department of Defense (DoD) technology such as sensing, imaging, and communications systems. Correlators are a vital tool in comparing, contrasting, and ultimately processing signals. Current digital correlators are large, power-hungry systems that are the size of a briefcase. BAE Systems’ approach to developing analog correlators will maintain or improve performance while reducing the system to the size of a hockey puck. As part of the program, BAE Systems seeks to deliver a radically more power-efficient analog correlator with high dynamic range and wide bandwidth. It will enable new capabilities including synthetic aperture radar image classification and image formation, automatic target recognition, passive coherent location, and jam-resistant communications in small form factor platforms. Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace (KONGSBERG) has signed a contract through the International Fund for Ukraine for the delivery of Counter Uncrewed Aerial Systems (C-UAS), which will be donated to Ukraine. The delivery consists of several CORTEX Typhon systems, developed to counter a wide specter of UAVs with solutions to either physically harm or otherwise disable the aerial threat. The contract value is GBP 56m. The CORTEX Typhon C-UAS is based on field-proven software and hardware from Teledyne Flir and KONGSBERG, including surveillance system and KONGSBERG Remote Weapon Station (RWS) and CORTEX Integrated Combat Solution (ICS). As part of the delivery, the Norwegian Government has donated Dingo 2 vehicles, KONGSBERG RWS and weapons. UGL has confirmed that the company has secured a contract with the Department of Defence valued at $500m for the delivery of strategic advice, planning, supply management, operations, and maintenance for the Australian Defence Force’s fuel network. Under the contract, UGL, a member of the CIMIC Group, will deliver all maintenance and operations services throughout the Defence fuel network. It also covers the delivery of asset advice, assurance, and ADF fuel supply management. Australian small businesses participating in Boeing Australia’s first Capability Up-Lift Program have graduated with seven Boeing contracts, including agreements with three new suppliers. The year-long Capability Up-Lift Program, designed to support companies who may not have experience working in a defence environment, was delivered with Defence’s Office of Defence Industry Support (ODIS), AusIndustry and Defence Jobs Queensland. Together, they shared resources and access to industry experts to provide SMEs with advisory services, mentoring and major event access to enhance business readiness and Defence maturity. 14 Aug 23. Marshall Aerospace has secured a contract to perform two crucial modifications and extensive servicing on the South African Air Force’s (SAAF) C-130 fleet, as well as supporting subsequent incountry modification work. Marshall previously led a comprehensive multi-year upgrade programme for the SAAF C-130 fleet roughly 20 years ago. The programme entailed installation of a digital autopilot, flight displays, a navigation systems upgrade, communications and self-defence integration, and enhancements to the electrical generation system. Since the completion of these upgrades, in-country maintenance of the fleet has been performed by Denel (a state-owned maintenance, repair and overhaul facility). Marshall will initially modify one aircraft, replacing the existing Secondary Flight Display (SFD) and implementing an Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast – Out (ADSB-Out) – an internationally required system for determining and periodically broadcasting the aircraft’s location without the use of ground-based interrogation signals. Following testing and verification of these modifications on the first aircraft, Marshall will also supply Denel with service bulletin kits containing all parts, components and instructions needed to perform the same modifications on four additional C-130 aircraft in South Africa. Marshall will also train Denel and SAAF technicians on the modification implementation processes. Under the new contract, Marshall will also perform depth maintenance, which will involve comprehensive inspections, repairs, and rectification. The first of the SAAF aircraft arrived at Cambridge on Friday 11th August ahead of modification work.
