09 Sep 21. British Army and Adarga partner on BattleLab hackathon. A British Army-backed hackathon will be hosted at the Defence BattleLab from 15-17 September, running in tandem with DSEI 2021 in London.
Technology and data experts from the British Army and Adarga are partnering on a 48-hour Defence BattleLab ‘Hackathon’ event to brainstorm future ‘battle winning’ digital tools.
Teams will be tasked with developing software and algorithm-driven solutions that can address challenges faced by the Field Army.
Winning solutions will be further developed and tested in the field within three months, shifting the Army’s ability to procure technology solutions more quickly.
Prototypes will be deployed on Exercise Rhino Charge in November.
British Army Head of Future Force Development Brig Matt Cansdale said: ‘The Hackathon is a really exciting venture, it fits with what we are trying to do in the wider Army, of moving to a more tech-led leap into the information age.
‘It shows the degree of critical thinking amongst our people who are ready to think outside the box and collaborate on work with much wider organisations.’
Solutions will be designed for a range of problems, including digitally understanding the routes used by military convoys, the impact of environmental factors on future missions and deployments and casualty extraction.
Adarga founder and CEO Robert Bassett Cross said the company was proud to support the approach, adding: ‘The Army’s rapid deployment of software to a real-world environment in line with realistic readiness timelines marks a hugely significant development that will shape the future of technology procurement for the whole of UK Defence.’ (Source: Shephard)
13 Sep 21. Kromek exhibits a new Covid-19 detector; handheld radiation devices at DSEI, London ExCeL Centre, 14-17 September 2021. Kromek, the biological and radiation detection specialists based in Sedgefield, County Durham, will exhibit their new, standalone Covid-19 detector, KAPScan, at DSEI, at London’s ExCel Centre from 14-17 September 2021. The company will be part of the MakeUK stand (Hall 2, Stand 429).
KAPScan (Kromek Automated Pathogen Scanner) is a standalone, fully autonomous Covid-19 Detection System that uses a targeted assay to sample the air every 30 minutes to confirm whether the disease – in all its potential variants – is present. Eighteen months into the worldwide Covid-19 pandemic, this high-speed, highly accurate device offers a revolutionary capability to understand and control the spread of the disease.
KAPScan-AT (Airborne Targeted) can be used indoors or outdoors, in static or mobile capacities and can be run continuously or as required. The device will report either the presence or absence of Covid-19. The speed and accuracy of reporting and localised monitoring enables a detailed understanding of the spread of the virus, and allows mitigating actions to be taken such as targeted testing or decontamination.
Dr Arnab Basu, Kromek’s Chief Executive Officer, said “I am delighted that KAPScan is making its debut at DSEI. It is a device that we designed to help the world get back to as normal a situation as possible despite the ongoing global pandemic.”
Kromek will also be featuring its latest hand-held radioisotope detection device, the D5 RIID, the smallest, lightest and most accurate wearable detector currently available.
The D5 RIID has been designed to detect the latest radiological hazards and to defeat the CBRN threat. It has an extensive built-in radioisotope library, to accurately identify even the smallest samples and the lowest dose rates. The D5 RIID can fit into the palm of one hand and is intuitive to operate, even while wearing full PPE. Weighing just 660g, it has a >24-hour endurance and has a networked capability to allow results to be transmitted to wherever they are needed in real time.
Craig Duff, Kromek’s CBRN Business Manager, said “We are looking forward to demonstrating our range of handheld radiation detectors to the military CBRN community at DSEI this week.”
15 Sep 21. Team MOBIUS. Today Jacobs has signed exclusive teaming agreements with Lockheed Martin, ATOS, Roke, BMT and MKC Training to develop an innovate and efficient Systems Integrator (SI) and Strategic Delivery Partner service solution for the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD), Land Environment Tactical Communications and Information Systems (LE TacCIS) portfolio. MORPHEUS is a sub-programme under LE TacCIS, and it requires a Future Operating model (FOM).
Jacobs and partners have formed team MOBIUS to provide an extensive set of Programmatic and Technical Engineering attributes that will deliver an enhanced System Integrator and Strategic Deliver Partnership service for the MORPHEUS FOM. It will also deliver supply chain management and operational service management.
Team MOBIUS brings together true collaboration from industry leaders with proven experience developing, integrating, and delivering complex mission critical systems for defence and industrial clients globally.
MOBIUS will encourage and sustain an inclusive and diverse set of Small to Medium Enterprises and supply chain community while continually horizon scanning and nurturing new technology and talent that will future proof and enhance the LE TacCIS service for the MOD as the MORPHEUS and LE TacCIS Future Operating Model develops.
The proposed LE TacCIS Future Operating Model, in contrast to the current single source prime supplier model, will be procured from multiple providers incentivised to deliver increased system agility, improved capability, vendor independence and Value for Money; this is key to delivering the strategic benefits of the LE TacCIS programme.
The Operating Model not only allows the MOD greater awareness of risks, but also enables earlier mitigations more effectively than under the current prime model.
The LE TacCIS programme consists of multiple sub-programmes and projects with the aim to deliver the next generation of tactical military communications in the land environment, through Evolutionary Capability Delivery and providing the means to make informed and timely decisions enabled by agile Communication Information Systems (CIS).
The programme portfolio consists of Bowman ComBAT Infrastructure and Platform, BCIP 5.6, the MORPHEUS sub-programme, the TRINITY sub-programme, Joint Common Remote Viewing Terminal (JCRVT), Dismounted Soldier Awareness (DSA), Falcon, NIOBE and multiple delivery and support projects such as MORPHEUS Test and Reference Centre and BEARERS.
LE TacCIS will deliver the first installation of Defence as a Platform (DaaP) in the tactical environment, providing the next generation of secure communications and awareness systems to16,000 Land platforms, the solider, 130 Royal Naval vessels and over 200 RAF aircraft.
The LE TacCIS programme is delivered by the Battlefield Tactical Communications and Information Systems (BATCIS) Delivery Team, in conjunction with Army Headquarters and Strategic Command/Defence Digital and key industry partners.
