25 Aug 11. The Ukrainian Defense Sector – The Ukraine is expected to invest US$12.7bn in the military from 2010 to 2015. Publisher: ICD Research. Published: Dec-2010
Price: $1,250 (Single user licence)
Throughout the review period (2004-2009), Ukrainian defense expenditure increased at a CAGR of 8.70%, and in 2010, valued an estimated US$1.7 billion. During the forecast period (2010-2015), defense expenditure is expected to grow at a CAGR of 8.37%, to reach US$2.6bn by 2015. This increase is primarily a result of tensions between the Ukraine and Russia, the acquisition of new defense systems and the country’s participation in international peacekeeping missions. Ukraine’s defense expenditure is closely correlated to overall economic growth, and as a consequence of the financial crisis, defense expenditure experienced a double digit decline in 2009. As a percentage of GDP, average Ukrainian defense expenditure during 2004-09 stood at 1.3%; however, during the forecast period, defense expenditure is expected to reduce to an average of 1.1% of the country’s GDP. The reduction in defense expenditure as a percentage of GDP can be attributed to a relatively higher GDP growth rate. The majority of the Ukrainian defense budget is allocated to revenue expenditure, primarily due to the country’s large troop size. During the review period (2004-2009) the nation allocated an average of 86% of defense budget towards revenue expenses, while an average of 14% of the total defense budget was invested in the acquisition and modernization of military hardware. This distribution is not expected to change considerably during the forecast period (2010-2015), as the country is unlikely to undertake major procurements due to budget constraints.
