Qioptiq Cats Have It Covered A clear vision with an eye to the future By Dr Ken Edwards, Engineering Technical Lead, Advanced Optronics

November 28, 2016 by Julian Nettlefold

qioptiqQioptiq has a proud heritage of designing and manufacturing optical solutions for airborne, ground vehicle, man-portable and naval applications. We differentiate ourselves by offering cutting edge design and utilising the latest technologies to deliver world-class affordable performance. Our products are proven to perform in the most demanding military environments and we are a trusted partner in the global supply chain to defence primes and armed forces around the world.

As one of the world’s principle designers of infrared products Qioptiq have incorporated the latest optical and detector technologies, whilst creating cost effective solutions designed for high volume production. Our cameras are compatible with a variety of sensor technologies, allowing adaptability for a range of requirements.

Our latest product range includes cameras designed for medium wave infrared, long wave infrared and the visible spectrum, therefore ensuring that we can provide solutions for a variety of applications.

Examples include:

  • Remote weapon stations
  • Mast mounted surveillance
  • Border surveillance
  • Maritime surveillance
  • Airport surveillance
  • Vehicle mounted systems
  • Oil-rig installations

This product range offers market leading performance, affordability and reliability.

Overview of Ground Vehicle products:

JaguIR-L is Qioptiq’s longest range, ruggedised solution for tough environmental requirements. The camera is an extension to the JaguIR product making it ideal for applications requiring additional range performance. This robust solution combines the latest in detector technology with world class optics. Its rapid, continuous zoom function (x13.5 Continuous Optical Zoom) allows surveillance of vast areas, whilst also achieving impressive identification ranges (Man Detection >17km).

JaguIR is a Cooled MWIR solution for challenging, long range requirements. This robust solution combines the latest in detector technology with world class optics. Its rapid, continuous zoom function (x13.5 Continuous Optical Zoom) allows surveillance of vast areas, whilst also achieving impressive identification ranges (Man Detection >11km).

PanthIR12 and PanthIR17 are the next generation uncooled LWIR continuous zoom lenses (x10 Continuous Optical Zoom). The PanthIR optical module is optimised for the latest generation of 17μm and 12μm uncooled focal plane arrays (including HD formats). The system has been designed to be compatible with all commonly used sensor engines.

CougIR is an uncooled LWIR continuous zoom lenses (x6) that offers competitive range performance in a reduced envelope for requirements with tight space constraints. It is ruggedised and optimised for the latest generation of 17μm and 12μm uncooled focal plane arrays.

Ocelot is Qioptiq’s visible camera offering which enhances the entire thermal suite by providing a wider spectral capability. This creates an ideal solution for security and remote monitoring applications.

An important feature of Qioptiq systems is the sensor agnostic approach taken during design, which allows a variety of cores to be integrated within our product. This allows for competitive pricing, the ability for onshore input from end users and being able to supply leading product anywhere around the globe using compliant equipment.

Future proofing our design is at the forefront of the design principle at Qioptiq so as not to cause obsolescence issues for customers. All current camera designs are capable of taking the latest format detector sizes and some which are still on the drawing board.

Latest technology has Qioptiq looking at low light level sensors to incorporate into our range to provide a complete 24 hour digital surveillance suite.
