The concept of digital twins is not new to the defence industry, but it is emerging as being increasingly critical. The evolving nature of warfare, which now extends the battlefield into the digital domain, has made cyber resilience a critical pillar of national defence, and it is here that digital twin technologies are coming to the fore.

Why digital twins matter in defence

For the defence industry, digital twin technology offers a realistic yet risk free “wargame” environment, enabling military teams to prepare more effectively for high stakes combat scenarios. Digital twin-based testing and training environments enable leaders to make precise and timely decisions, ensuring a more combat-ready force and appropriate response.

However, when deployed effectively the technology extends beyond the battlefield to reshape all systems, networks, and training environments. At its core, a digital twin is a virtual representation of a physical object, process, or system, designed to mirror its real-world counterpart.

By replicating tools, configurations, and workflows used in actual operations, digital twins allow organisations to simulate, analyse, and optimise without any safety implications. They are not only risk free but also provide a rapidly reconfigurable environment without placing operational assets at risk.

As a digital twin exists entirely in a virtual space, it can be stress-tested and evaluated without compromising operational systems. At the extreme, it even enables safe destructive testing without financial or technical consequences.

Digital twin technology also supports testing and modelling at scale, eliminating the need for organisations to maintain a large inventory of spare assets configured to operate in the predicted environment. These capabilities accelerate experimentation and empower critical decision-making before any physical asset is altered by reducing risk and optimising resources.

Core applications in defence

Bridging the gap between digital and physical worlds, digital twins provide high-context, risk-free environments that support multiple mission-critical functions in the defence industry.

Firstly, digital twin technology provides greater clarity on various components by allowing organisations to simulate different operational scenarios.

This helps analyse the effectiveness of existing security parameters, allowing organisations to identify technical inconsistencies early on and eventually optimise processes, improve product quality and enhance overall performance.

Beyond the streamlining of operations, digital twins also address one of the defence industry’s biggest challenges: testing new technologies without interrupting ongoing operations. In today’s world, where there are countless new solutions emerging every day that need to be tested to maintain a competitive edge, this capability is critical.

With the ability to create an exact digital replica of product assets, digital twin technology allows defence organisations to test new solutions and check their validity and compatibility in a simulated environment.

One of the other areas where digital twins support defence organisations is training and upskilling. Significant challenges and high costs associated with traditional hands-on training in the sector make digital twins a valuable and viable alternative.

By replicating real-world assets, digital twins create immersive virtual environments that enable organisations to train new personnel as well as improve skills. While enhancing engagement within teams and testing skills with different systems in controlled sessions, this approach also provides insights into gaps and pinpoints specific requirements to offer more focused training.

Last but not least, digital twin-based testing and training environments also allow defence organisations to simulate cyberattacks, identify vulnerabilities, and evaluate system resilience in a safe environment.

Closing the gap between technology and strategy

Besides all the applications outlined, the crucial factor that makes digital twins essential for increasing defence capabilities lies in its ability to connect strategic objectives with practical implementation.

When it comes to handling risk, traditional cyber exercises often operate in isolation – you’re attacked, you defend, and the scenario ends there. However, digital twins don’t only create exact replicas but meaningful ones, which means they create a mirror image of an organisation’s live environment, modelling both technology and business processes.

They provide a virtual model of the operating environment, including decision-making frameworks, and strategic initiatives. This enables defence leaders to conduct collective tests, gain real-time visibility into execution and monitor key processes in real-time. By doing so, they can identify any gaps in communication and decision-making and address far more complex organisational challenges.

In a real-case scenario, Cyber Threat Intelligence teams face hundreds of virtual machines representing everything from standard Windows and Linux systems to servers, and business-critical services. These teams must recognise the critical assets, determine what can be compromised and allocate limited resources efficiently.

Yet this decision-making necessitates insights from engineers and strategic direction from leadership requiring seamless communication between hierarchical and operational teams.

By replicating real environments and workflows, digital twins quickly expose blind spots and vulnerabilities in processes and communication.

These insights enable defence leaders to detect risk before it leads to failure and help prioritise next steps to address and rectify them. This ensures focus is placed on the most impactful decisions rather than reacting to ‘noise’. Giving leaders and teams the tools to adapt and align on execution in real-time ultimately enhances decision-making agility.

The imperative of preparedness

Given the rise of digital warfare and weaponised technology, digital twins are becoming increasingly critical to future defence strategies. Their unique ability to model and simulate real-world scenarios in a cyber-range environment makes them more than a technological advantage – they are becoming a strategic necessity.

By bridging the gap between planning and execution, digital twins empower defence organisations to innovate safely, respond decisively, and maintain operational superiority against both physical and digital threats.
